A New Estate Pipe

The photo above is of a new estate pipe Patty gave me for Christmas, along with a new tamper as a gift as well.  The pipe is a Willard estate pioe, which is a pipe manufacturer I have never heard of before.  So, I did some research and found out that Willard pipes were made between 1963 and 1975 in Sparta, North Carolina.  I tried to find a more specific date for this pipe, but that was about all I could find.  So, this pipe is between 50 and 60 years old.

As far as I could tell, it may have been smoked, but only once or twice.  One reviewer of a Willard pipe he owns and smokes said in a review that it is his best pipe.  The pipe has a metal connection that screws into the stummel of the pipe.  The metal connection has a hole from which the smoke is drawn.  I am on my second bowl of Sunset Rum by Sutliff that Patty and my sons bought me for Christmas.  I really enjoy Rum flavored tobacco with the others being Rum and Maple, and Jamaican Export by Villiager, which is also a Rum based tobacco.

I was reading an article this morning about the top ten strangest things that a Florida man or Florida woman has done this year.  Besides the ordinary, was a Florida woman who had on her bucket list to be arrested.  It happened on May 10, when she was attempted to be stopped by the police for a traffic violation.  But instead of pulling over like most people do, she took off in her car and was arrested for fleeing the police.  I thought being arrested as an item on one's bucket list was really strange.

I read articles and watch videos while smoking my pipe.  I watched a video made about six years ago about the cost of smoking pipes.  The initial cost at that time was a hundred to begin if one bought an estate pipe, a pipe tool, pipe cleaners, a pipe pouch for one pipe, and a lighter from a reputable pipe and tobacco shop.  All that was needed was the tobacco which he listed at $5.  And if a pipe smoker really gets into the hobby, not only will one collect pipes, but one will begin to collect tobacco for cellaring, which in itself isn't cheap.

Back in 1973 I spent $35 on my very first pipe, but then I bought an ashtray, a humidor for tobacco, and all the other stuff that came to over $75.  But I still have everything I purchased with my first pipe, except for the tobacco.  Then I began acquiring pipes over the years.  And yes, I have smoked them all.  There are still a few pipes I would like to own, but the gifted pipes are really special.  There is nothing like relaxing or coversing with a pipe.  The only thing that I can add to make it better would be a glass of good Rum.  My bucket list is a lot different from the Florida woman I just mentioned.

Well, those are my thoughts for the day.  I thank you for your time and I wish Peace to each of one of you.

Dave
