Santa Without a Pipe?

I read a blog post yesterday about a Canaduan woman who in 2012 re-wrote The Night Before Christmas and removed the reference to Santa's pipe which originally said the smoke from his pipe circled his head like a wreath.  She spent $50,000 of her own money to purchase 50,000 copies of her re-write to distribute to children out of her own fear that the reference to Santa's pipe smokingcwas a bad influence on his children.

In my thinking that is like removing all religious symbolism from the Christmas story.  Aa I related the article to my family, Jordan said this woman has too much time on her hands and too much money to spend on such a frivolous idea.  I agreed.  Some people just want to remove the symbolism of Christmas because they find some ideas aboit Christmas to be offensive.  The Night Before Christmas was written in 1823 and Santa has smoked a pipe ever since.

I will bet you most kids never gave it a thought that Santa smoked a pipe.  Pipes have been a part of Christmas ever since Clement Moore wrote the story.  How many Rockwell paintings have depicted Santa with a pipe?  The image of Santa with a pipe is an iconic image that goes back 200 years.  And how many kids have been influenced by that image?  My guess is, not many.  I never gave it a thought, but I wonder how many people have associated a pipe with Christmas?  Probably everyone!

I received the above pipe and tamper from my family as a gift for Christmas.  Patty liked the blue color of pipe and thought it would make a very unusual gift and she was right.  The tamper was from Jordan.  The pipe is a Savinelli Arcobaleno Blue pipe from their Arcobaleno line of pipes.  They come in brown, bright red, blue, and green.  Arcobaleno means rainbow in Italian.  I have more Savinelli pipes in my collection than any other maker of pipes.

I also received some tobacco as gifts and am currently smoking Rum and Maple tobacco by Sutliff.  I genuinely hope Santa smokes a pipe for generations to come.  When I was a kid I thought it was cool for Santa to smoke a pipe and really some people have too much time on their hands.  Santa has smoked a pipe for some 200 years and it hasn't killed him yet.  My thinking is it never will.  Here is hoping your Christmas was a good one and here is wishing you a Happy New Year.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
