A Good Ten Buck Cigar
As many of you know, as a pipe smoker, I smoke the occasional cigar. The other evening I went into a local Cigar Bar just to see what they had. I walked to the back of the place where the cigar humidor was. I was met by one of the co-owners of the business. We chatted for a bit and I learned they also own a pipe shop in downtown Ft. Meyers. While there I perused the shelves of cigars and found one that looked pretty good to me. It had a Connecticut shade grown binder, which indicated it was a milder cigar.
The cigar was a larger ring size than I would have liked, but it was short enough to fit nicely in my shirt pocket. I had never heard of the brand before, but unless a person is looking for a particular brand, brand doesn't really matter when it comes to cigars. But my wife will tell you there is a difference in the aroma between a three buck cigar and one costing ten dollars. But unless I am buying a Hemmibgway Signature cigar, most any cigar will do if it has a lighter wrapper. So, I bought my cigar and he showed me some Nording pipes he had for sale and asked if I heard of him. I said I own three, one of which I am smoking this morning.
I like an occasional cigar, but I don't fancy myself as any kind of cigar expert. I like lighter wrappers and about ten bucks is the most I will spend on a cigar. Some say pipes are expensive, but one pipe is about the cost of a box of 20 quality cigars and after a bowl one still has a pipe. For my ten bucks, I coukd have bought a tin of pipe tobacco good for about 20 bowls. I still like an occasional cigar, but really, I am a pipe smoker. A lot of pipe smokers smoke cigars, but fewer cigar smokers also smoke pipes.
So I settled in with that cigar on Sunday and decided I like my pipes so much better. The pipe tobacco has a much cleaner aroma when smoked and some pipe tobaccos almost smell like incense. Not so with cigars. And pipes are so much more economical. I would much rather spend a hundred bucks on a pipe I can have than on a box of 20 decent cigars.
No, I am a pipe smoker. Once in a great while I will smoke a cigar, but not often. Besides which no one would say a pipe is a widowmaker. I am enjoying my Nording pipe this morning with a bowl of Cornell and Diehl Morning Light. I am enjoying this so much more than I did my ten buck cigar. I think my wife is too.
Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
