About Naming My Pipes
Before I go any further, today is my son's birthday and I'll give a shout out to him this morning. I read a blog post about a pipe smoker who named his pipes. I never gave it a thought. I'm not into naming my cars, nor have I given much thought to giving proper names to anything I own. I did give it some thought however, as I was smoking my newest Nording yesterday, to having another name for it aparr from my newest Nording. I have two Nording pipes apart from my Angel pipe that I have a difficult time distinguishing for my posts here. I hesitate to say one of my Nording pipes is a birthday pipe, because my Angel pipe is actually my birthday pipe and the other I purchased a few weeks after my birthday.
I just refer to my pipes by manufacturer, style, and/or number, if they have one. I thought about names for my pipes, if I were to name them, but am not so sure what those names would be. Yesterday, I was smoking my newest Nording and I was looking at to whether Nording had a name for it. There is a number 3 stamped on it, indicating that is a three series pipe. And instead of my saying it is my newest Nording, I could just call it my "Number 3" pipe.
Today I decided to smoke my Sherlock Holmes pipe again. I could just call that my Sherlock pipe since I don't have anything like that one. I just don't know. I am not into naming things, like cars or pipes or anything else, but I'll name a pet, of course, or my kids, or my wife, although she had a name before I knew her. But coming up with names for a few pipes might not be too difficult.
Since I bought my Gettysburg estate pipe with the three fingers and a thumb carved into the bowl, I could call that my "Colonel pipe." I have a Meerschaum pioe from Turkey I could call "The Turk." My Lee Van Cleef Meerschaum could be "Mr. Lee." And I could go on and on. But a Peterson System Standard 307 is a very unique description for that pipe, although, if I could just call it "Pete" or something like that, then I would at least know what it is.
I have only one Churchwarden pipe, and that one I could call "Father O'Brien." Or "The Vicar,"or some other name related to chirch work. I could call it "Deac," short for "Deacon." I could go on and on through my some 35 pipes and try to figure out a name for each one, but those are my more unique pipes. The fact is I would like to name my pipes, but I would need a cross-reference guide to remember which is which.
Well, those are my thoughts this morning. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
