Do Angels Have Wings?

We bought a new Angel from Amazon that was delivered yesrday.  Every Angel I shopped for had wings.  I know that for some people Angels are mythical creatures that do not in any way connect with our lives.  Then there are those for whom Angels are real.  I fall into the latter camp, but have been until recently, very quiet about Angel's.  But in all the Angels I looked at on Amazon they all had wings.

In fact removing wings from Angel's would be like changing the date of Christmas.  Most anyone would say Angels must have wings.  Any imagery of Angels without wings would be like removing wings from birds, or destruction of wings of a butterfly.  Or it would be like saying fairies don't have wings.  Can you imagine Tinker Bell without wings?  But there is nothing in the Bible that depicts Angels with wings.

But what of historical works of art?  Because Angels seem to appear out of nowhere, it is assumed Angels have wings.  People who have encountered Angels have said they were winged creatures.  But more often than not Angels appear in human form or can take many shapes.  But early art has depicted Angels with wings and since medieval times Angels have always had wings.  It would be wrong to say they don't have wings, but more often than not they appear in human form.

But take away the wings of Angels and you have stripped all those who believe in Angels, the imagery accompanied by wings.  So, all the Angels I shopped for on Amazon all had wings.  In fact, it would be wrong according to many to assume Angels don't have wings.  So, my new angel has wings and I am not sure I want it any other way.  Wings on a figure in any imagery of Angels has wings.  It's the way it should be.  Take wings away from Angels and the romance of Angels is completely removed.

One of my favorite songs is by Herb Ernst called "Angels' Wings."   If you've never heard this song before there are many renditions of it on YouTube.  I highly recommend you listen to it sometime.  Now, I've said here I don't want to get into religion, but Angels are a part of culture and I am not promoting a religion but writing about a belief.  I am out on the patio this morning smoking my Churchwarden pipe.  I am smoking a bowl of Briar Fox and will have a bowl a day until it's gone.  I thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
