Why so Few Pipe Reviews
I was going to answer this question along with writing about tobacco and reviews, but decided I needed two posts to cover them adequately. Today, I will write about pipes, exclusively, and tomorrow I will write about tobacco and reviews. But the real question is, why aren't there pipe reviews. And the answer is quite simple: There don't need to be any.
Buying a pipe is different from buying tobacco. If one wants to spend $500 on a Dunhill pipe and has the extra money and wants a status symbol, one will spend $500 or more on a Dunhill pipe. But if one has only $50 to spend on a pipe, one might get a good cob pipe or one might just get a Dr. Grabow pipe.
But the average pipe smoker will spend a hundred or so on a Peterson or Savinelli. A pipe purchase isn't just determined by price, but manufacturer, and shape and size of the pipe. Erin Go Braugh makes a Gallway Calabash that looks identical to the Peterson Sherlock Holmes pipe I just purchased that is considerably less than the Peterson pipe. But while it might look almost identical, I assure you they are considerably different pipes.
So budget constraints have a lot to do with purchasing pipes and why reviews of specific pipes are hard to come by. A description of a pipe will be found on most websites for most any pipe. But while some might say that a pipe is just a pipe, a lot of consideration goes into buying a pipe. But the main factors are manufacturer, price, shape, and bowl size. Some pipe smokers like Bing Crosby, for example, only smoked straight stem Canadian style pipes. The image we often see now of Sherlock Holmes is the curved Calabash style pipe.
Pipes come in many shapes, colors, styles, and prices. And the only way to find out about which is right for any person isn't so much to read pipe review, but to study as to what is out there and start simple with a cheap cob pipe. There are so many shapes and styles out there that one might not know where to begin. Study pipe styles and shapes. Read about manufacturers. And either visit a comprehensive website like Smoking Pipes or visit a local pipe shop. Read or learn about various manufacturers of pipes.
And then if one had the availability of a brick and mortar shop, one could spend time there and learn about the hobby of pipe smoking. But one will find descriptions of various pipes, but reviews of pipes won't be found. An affordable pipe depends on one's budget. But one can't really go wrong with a Peterson or Savinelli. And that is why you won't find many, if any reviews on particular pipes. Descriptions, yes, but not reviews. One just needs to enjoy shopping for a pipe.
I'm out on the patio this morning where I am smoking my La Roma Vallerio pipe with my Evening Rum tobacco. It is in the high 60's and there was some fog this morning. It has since cleared up. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
