A Nice Day?
Telling someone to have a nice day is a carry-over from the 60's that began with a T-shirt and a smiley face. And of course it was mocked in all sorts of ways. But it all began with the smiley face, which by the way, was never trademarked. The guy who created the smiley face wanted everyone to use it and now we have smiley face emojis that express every emotion possible.
In passing the other day, the carry over from my Northern roots showed when I told one in passing it's a beautiful day, like for Florida that is unusual. In the upper climes a beautiful fay can be unusual through June. Down here such a comment means nothing except for after a hurricane. I've been here for almost six months and have not experienced a day that wasn't beautiful. So a comment like, nice weather we're having, means absolutely nothing here.
It raises the question as to where I have been for six months. Where have I been? Alaska? Or causes one to ask the question: Where HAVE you been? The rainy season begins in mid-May and I suspect there will be times I can comment on the weather without sounding stupid or from another place. Down here no one comments on the weather unless one asks if you are staying through the hurricane. Some might wonder if you are leaving for hurricane season and might ask where your other home is.
So, maybe I don't need to comment on the weather unless it's raining. Then I might say something. I heard that Aruba was in search of a weather caster for one of their TV stations. They said it's the best job as like 365 days a year the weather is the same. So, they said it's a trial for one week, because they fear the weather caster will get bored giving the same information every day. So, if you're interested they'll hire anyone. It's the easiest weather job in the world.
Actually things could interesting in the next month or so, but we never watch a weather cast here. Unless we want to know if it's snowing in New York. We have to watch the Weather Channel if we want to actually see weather. News here is whether it drops below 40 over night and the Iguanas start falling out of trees. A day hasn't gone by that I can't sit on the patio. I think I've worn a jacket a few times and a day has begun that I'll wear long sweat pants and a sweatshirt. But I've always been pretty much right here with a pipe.
Today I am smoking my Lee Van Cleef Meerschaum pipe with Autumn Evening and it's warm and sunny. I'll let you know if it's raining. Even then you can't say it's a lousy day. The response would be, "What do you expect this time of year?" I guess that's why people head north by mid-May. If you're still here then you're a resident. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
