The Old Professor
I believe I said in another post that I never had professors who smoked pipes. So, I can't identify with leather chairs one sinks into or wood panelled walls with an old professor behind a fairly modest wooden desk full of papers, smoking a pipe. But such is the imagery of Old Professor pipe tobacco. As I discovered both Autumn Evening and Tropical Export as my favorite Aromatics, I may have found my favorite English pipe tobacco.
Old Professor by Sutliff has just the right amount of Latakia to give the Virginia's and other Orientals just enough flavor. I asked my wife to smell the bag of tobacco right after it arrived and she liked the aroma. After smoking several bowls in several pipes, I found the balance of the tobaccos to be perfect. The aroma is what I would say is as ot was described. It burns cool and it needs no relight. The moisture content is perfect and needs to be kept just slightly moist to give it that extra flavor.
I have been anticipating this tobacco since I ordered it a week ago. I said that maybe eight ounces might be too much for a tobacco I've never tried, but I am not disappointed. To the contrary, it is exactly as it was described in the description. This does not mean I won't try other tobaccos, but I'll always have some of this on hand as I do the other two other favorite Aromatics. But I have found out that my wife just does not like any English tobaccos, including this one. One reviewer said his wife liked the aroma, but I was not surprised when my wife said she didn't care for it.
The room note is quite pleasant to me unlike other English tobaccos I have tried. The balance of Virginia's is just right with the Latakia and Orientals. But it is exactly as I expected to be when I ordered it. It is not overpowering like some English I have had. I am truly amazed that this tobacco is exactly what I expected it to be. Even Aitumn Evening as an Aromatic took some getting used to. But this is like meeting a person for the first time knowing they will soon become an "old" friend. You just know.
I knew this tobacco would be like this. I just knew. It's not the name, but the flavor and aroma is like that of an old friend. Such as it is with Old Professor. Yes, I often wish I had at least one professor who smoked a pipe, but I know now what that experience would be. It's a tobacco packed with a lot of wisdom behind it. Maybe I romanticize about it too much and it's not as though I have had a lot of it. But a couple of bowls a day will suit me just fine.
Today I am smoking my Savinelli Author pipe with a bowl of Old Professor tobacco. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
