A Lot of Boats

It's Saturday morning as I am writing this.  I am smoking my Tim West pipe with Sutliff's Vanilla Cream tobacco.  My wife and I don't have much planned for the day, but it being Saturday, we have seen a lot of boats go by as we sit on the lanai.  I have been told by reliable sources that there are two happiest days of boat ownership; the day you buy a boat and the day you sell it.  This is why renting boats is best.  We just enjoy watching the boats as they go by critiquing each one.

The fact is I enjoy going out on boats.  I have my rod and reel I bought in NY for fishing up there, but some fish here might be too big for this particular rod and reel.  I have thought about fishing off the dock here just to see what might be out there.  But like the photo above I took recently, most of the boats we see are pleasure boats.  Some people might be going out to the bay to do some fishing, but it seems most boats are simply going for a pleasure cruise.

I've spent quite a bit of time on or in boats and I enjoyed it.  As to whether I would like to own a boat, I can honestly say I have no desire to own one. I've been told that Tarpon fishing is pretty good out in the bay where the river meets the ocean, but I really don't have much of a desire to fish here.  Maybe given more time here I might find a favorite fishing spot where I can sit on a bank and smoke my pipe not caring whether I catch anything or not.  Some sport fishermen have no patience to sit in one spot if the fish aren't biting.  But I don't think I'll ever become a sport fisherman.

Boating really is about the enjoyment of getting out on the water.  I like the idea of anchoring in waist deep water off the shore of a beach and being able to see the ocean bottom from a rather shallow depth.  There are aspects of boating I enjoy.  One person said about boat ownership is to make sure one has towing insurance.  This particular boat owner says he is on a first name basis with one of the towing companies.  My wife has a cousin who was in the Coast Guard and he said a boat has a fifty/fifty chance of not returning.

A boat might look like something one might want to own, but really a boat is a very poor investment.  Most of the time a boat just sits there at its dock and to prevent barnacles from building up under the surface, a dry dock is best.  But that is just another expense for a boat.

I think I am a landlubber at heart.  Once in a while I'll think that a boat would be nice as I see the boats go by, but then I'll think about all I've said here and say that it might be best not to own a boat.  And then I'm not so envious of the boats that go by.  But my wife and I enjoy sitting out here on the lanai and watch the boats as they go by.  They're enjoyable to watch, but I think watching is better than doing in this case.

We like looking at the water here and once in a while fish will churn the surface as the dolphins try to corral them.  I can smoke my pipe without the worries of being on the water.  It's a great way to pass the time.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
