A Twisted Reality

I might be on a theme by saying we live in a parallel universe.  Back in the late 50's and early 60's was a TV show called The Twilight Zone.  One of my favorite episodes was about a parallel universe involving an astronaut.  But before I get into it, it's Monday morning and I am smoking my Peterson Sherlock Holmes pipe that I am now smoking quite often.  At first, I wasn't too sure about this pipe.  I smoked it a couple of times and then I thought it wasn't broken in correctly.

I told my wife it might look good in my collection, but that it might have a design flaw.  So, I put my Holmes pipe on the rack thinking I wouldn't smoke it again.  Then after a month or so, I examined my Holmes pipe again and thought myself to have been wrong.  I decicided to smoke it again and am now smoking it regularly.  I am smoking my Tropical Export this morning as I write.

Now, getting back to The Twilight Zone, I really like the one about the astronaut.  Either we had sent men into space, or were about to at the time this particular episode aired.  But this astronaut goes into space and crosses a barrier that puts him in an alternate universe.  He comes back to earth and finds his wife put up a picket fence.  Everything is the same except for him.  His commander is the same, but goes by a different name.  His wife says about her astronaut husband that he's the same but different.  But it's his daughter that says he's not her daddy.

So, what happens next is that we see the same astronaut in his capsule, but he seems to cross another barrier that puts him in the correct universe.  His capsule is picked up out of the ocean and now his commander is the same guy with the correct name.  His house does not have a picket fence and his wife does not question who he is.  His daughter accepts him and in the end he's happy to be home.

At the time this episode aired, all possibilities about space travel existed.  There was so much we didn't know that was out there.  Rod Sterling fed off our feats with the what if question that many people were asking about space travel.  And for the time this episode was probably the most interesting Twigglight Zone Rod Sterling had written.  We just didn't know.

I keep seeing videos about what Voyagers I or Ii has discovered.  And the James Webb Space Telescope is giving cause for theoretical physicists to rethink all their presumptions.  We are still guessing about what is out there, but any threats to our existence are millions of light years away.  Some have speculated that Betelgeuse is about to go into a supernova phase.  Is our existence threatened?  No one seems to know.

But still we aren't sure some parallel universe does not exist.  In fact, we aren't really sure as to what is out there.  What James Webb has done is to give a lot of material to science fiction writers.  Anything is possible.  We don't know what we don't know and probably never will.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
