Thoughts from Afar

I was going to write about another Twilight Zone episode.  I did, but deleted it.  Enough about the Twilight Zone.  I'm smoking my Savinelli Author pipe this Wednesday morning with Sutliff's Old Professor.  I have been saying that Sutliff's Vanilla Custard s Vanilla Cream  I'm drinking a cup of Blue Bottle coffee with my pipe.  May begins the rainy season in Florida and the skies have been overcast the past few days.  I love to sit on the lanai here and watch the boats go by.  It is just so relaxing here on the lanai.

Writing about one Twilight Zone  episode is enough.  I could spend a whole year writing about various episodes of that TV show.  I have two favorite TV shows I could watch over and over, the other being M*A*S*H.  I'll avoid writing about either of these shows from here on out.  The former is five seasons and the latter is eleven seasons.  That is too much about these two shows.  I'll just say they are my favorites and leave it at that.

Back in the mid-90's I wrote an unpublished novel.  I thought about getting it published, but as a first attempt at a novel, I just think it's best as it is.  I'm probably better as an essayist than I am a novelist.  But writing is something I have done for most of my life.  I thought about being a script writer, but there again that is a special talent that requires a certain gift.  And comedy writing really is the most unique of all talents.  I have found writing to be something I can do for pleasure if I don't feel I have to produce for deadlines and schedules.  I'm just too undisciplined to meet a production schedule.

I once asked a college professor of English if he ever learned another language.  He said he hadn't yet mastered the English language to learn another language.  I had a professor who held up a book in class saying it was the best book he had ever read.  A student in the front saw the book and commented after class the book was written in French.  I might be able to learn French in order to read a book written in French, but the fact is I'd never be able to master French in order to write fluently in French.

So, I've decided to just work on my English.  With Google translate I might be able to write in most any language, but the fact is any direct translation would never translate well.  I might start another book.  I've thought about it. There are writers who weren't recognized until after they were 70, although I have to admit the Internet has changed things quite a bit.  I'm not too worried about getting published after 70. Writers struggle as does any artist seeking recognition.

But unlike the stage or in movies, artists such as poets, writers, and painters can be of any age.  But Hollywood likes youth.  No question about it.  Commercialism caters to consumers.  They are typically those in their teens to mid-forties.  After that older people tend to become investors and spend less.   I'm not really an aspiring writer.  I've dabbled in writing; not seeking a career as a writer.

Those are my thoughts for now.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
