The Meaning of My Pipe

I'm smoking my Gettysbutg pipe this morning and I decided to Google the meaning behind three fingers and a thumb.  Yes, three fingers come from the Hunger Games and I came across many references to the Hunger Games.  But then I came across a definition that comes from France that three fingers and a thumb means liberty, freedom, and pro-democacracy mostly after WWII.  This pipe may have come from this movement from France AFTER WWII.

Now, to say this is a French pipe might be stretching it a bit, but it seems this meaning MIGHT be the meaning behind the symbolism of this pipe.  I possessed this pipe long before the Hunger Games and it seems to me that it comes from a post-war era.  And I wondered whether this pipe is symbolic of something more significant.

In Serbia, for example one crossed oneself with three fingers representing the Trinity and would have been common in Eastern Orthodox Christianity.  But there was no mention of the thumb.  In Orthodox Christianity, the thumb would be held by the little finger, so the thumb is not intregal to this symbolism.  But the thumb is intregal to the hand gesture originating in France as mentioned above.

For me to say this pipe comes from a post-war democracy movement in France might be stretching it a bit, but it seems to me this might be the more logical conclusion as to why this pipe has three fingers and a thumb.  I am certain that the carving on this pipe is symbolic with great meaning.  I'm more willing to accept the meaning being symbolic of a pro-democracy, liberty, and freedom movement of a post-war France than I can accept as being anything else.

Does this pipe have origins in France?  There are no markings on this pipe to indicate where or by whom this pipe was made.  I can assume most anything.  It could be a post-war Comoy from St. Claude, France, but that might be stretching a bit.  But the fact is it is a good quality pipe.  It is perhaps one of my best smoking pipes.  It is just one of those pipes that without the carving I would know nothing about.

When one buys an estate pipe with no markings on it and a carving, one can only guess the origins and significance of any given pipe.  But what I have said about it might make the best sense.  There IS a significance in the three fingers and the thumb.  It symbolizes something.  And from all I have read, what I have said makes the best sense.  I'll go with that until further research tells me otherwise.  Since my ancestors come from France going back some 800 years or so ago, I'll claim it as being a French pipe.  And it just might be a Comoy pipe.

I know it is a good quality pipe.  And it may have been created back in the late 40's, but that is a guess.  After doing some research on the subject, this might be the best I can do.  The fact is I enjoy this pipe very much.

I seem to fluctuate between liking and not liking very much Mixture No. 79.  I'm just not crazy about it.  I'll order some Autumn Evening with my next order.  After all it is still number one on my list as an Aromatic.  And it smells the best.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
