How Boring?
I saw a list on the most boring things we can do or do often. I have heard it said that watching golf is like watching grass grow, or as others have suggested, watching paint dry. Now, I know of no one who sits around and watches grass grow. But all of us have been stuck in traffic. On a list of fifty of the most boring things we do, this was number one. Everyone hates sitting in traffic. No question. The Glasgow Times compiled a list of fifty boring things people do almost every day.
While the list is British, it translates virtually anywhere in the US except here in the US as opposed to sitting in traffic being number one, our list says being bored at work is number one. Maybe here in the US we have more ways to pass the time when sitting in traffic. Power Point presentations were high on the Glasgow Times list. The Kardashians were number 14 on that list right after European football analysts.
Of course household chores were high on the list including the chore of ironing. I got out the iron here a week or so ago and I wondered when my wife last used an iron. She couldn't remember. Hardly anyone uses an iron anymore. An average American football game is about three and half hours long with actual playing time being about eleven minutes. Analysts, and a lot of commercials, mostly about beer, have to fill that time. There was one football game played between the Vikings and Packers that was televised without analysts, but that was once in the late 70's and the NFL hasn't broadcast a game like that since.
There are pipe smoking contests where the participants smoke their respective pipes and see whose bowl of tobacco lasts the longest without re-lighting. I would say that would be like watching grass grow, but no one watches grass grow. But such a contest would come close, maybe closer than watching golf. Do observers at pipe smoking contests cheer for their favorite participant? I doubt it.
For those of you who are curious about the record time for pipe smoking, it is 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 10 seconds. I won't go into further detail here, but depending on the weather, watching grass grow just might be a better past time. Some might suggest pipe smoking is as boring as it gets. I am sure that if someone were to observe me smoking my pipe, that person would rather watch grass grow.
Now, maybe you find this post boring, but I assure you that I did my research and could publish the Glasgow Times list, which most would agree with, but the order would be different for each person. Some might include things on their list the Glasgow Times left off and others might prioritize differently. I just might put a pipe smoking contest as my number one. I can't imagine watching some guy smoke a pipe for almost three hours. But someone did. Imagine how analysts would broadcast that!
Today it is overcast with a chance of rain later in the afternoon. I am smoking my "haunted" Gettysburg pipe with some Autumn Evening. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
