Life with a One Year Old

My Prince Albert is now one year old.  I decided to purchase a 14 ounce can of Prince Albert about a year ago.  When we left NY for Florida I had about a half of the can left.  It has been sitting in a cupboard quietly waiting for my return.  I have now had the opportunity to smoke the one year old tobacco for a few days.  I wish now to write about my impressions of it.

First of all, tobacco can get old and even moldy if not stored properly.  One can tell when opening a tin of stored tobacco whether it is okay to smoke.  Moldy tobacco will smell sour and not fresh.  I opened my tin of Prince Albert and immediately was met with the sweet smell of the Burly based tobacco.

It has some Virginia and a little Cavendish mixed in to give it a rather pleasant room note of a hint of Bleck Cherry.  It has a little earthy nutty flavor and I don't notice the Black Cherry too much, but it's there in the background.  Over all, I am quite impressed with its aging as it also has a bit of liquore flavoring, like a fine Bourbon, probably due to aging.  It's smoother now from what I remember from a year ago.

There is nothing from the tin note that tells me it hasn't aged properly.  I wasn't sure what to expect upon opening, but the Virginia in it has definitely added some sweetness to the Aroma.  It seems to smoke smoother with absolutely no bite whatsoever.  In fact, I am very happy with the aging process of this tobacco.

If one is wondering how long a tobacco can age, it can vary from one to twenty years or more depending on how it is stored.  It is recommended that if one wants to age properly a stored tobacco, it must be kept in a dark, cool, dry place.  When a piper talks about cellaring a tobacco, it is the same as storing a fine wine.  A damp place will cause mold or stateless.

I gave Prince Albert a thumbs up a year ago and now it's just better.  The flavor is richer from what I remember and the aging of the Virginia's have made it just a bit sweeter as noted with the slight liquore aroma and taste.  I would say that a year old Prince Albert rivals just about any fresh Aromatic.

We have work to do today, so my pipe smoking is on hold right now.  We had a thunderstorm last night and looks like it might rain.    The temp right now is 73 and will get to about 80, but no rain is in the forecast.  We'll see how much we get done today.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
