The Captain Tells a Good Story

 When one smokes a pipe, one wants to match the tobacco with the literature one is reading.  Shakespeare requires a good English tobacco.  One might read Alice in Wonderland while smoking Eilenn's Dream which requires some thought and one I'll review later on.  The verdict is still out on that one.  But a good Aromatic matches a good story teller.  One won't read Kierkegaard or Kant with Captain Black Original, but one might read a book by a good story teller.  You might know The Old Man the Sea by heart.  The title IS the story.  That describes Captain Black Original perfectly.  It tells a good story without having to think through it.

Captain Black Original is simply like a good story you know by heart.  It tells a well-written story like that of a Hemingway.   This blend doesn't require a lot of thought.  One reviewer likened it to smoking cardboard.  Others have said it's like sitting down and conversing with an old friend at the pub.  You know what to expect and it delivers.  I tend to think of it as the latter.  I had one bowl of Eileen's Dream in my one pipe and it took two bowls of the Captain to get rid of the ghosting.  

Captain Black Original is like that conversation or sitting down with a familiar story.   It's just a simple good Aromatic that doesn't pretend to be something it isn't.  Eileen's Dream is like a first date.  Captain Black Original is the wife one has been married to for years.  And it seems women are attracted to the Aroma of Captain Black Original.  It's an Aromatic, but one doesn't analyze it and try to figure it out.  Plain and simple, it is just a good Aromatic, which explains why it has been a best seller since its arrival in1956.  

Captain Black Original smells good upon opening the can.  Some say it has a chemical odor, but really, most Ameeican Aromatics are artificial.  The character of Captain Black is simple, not complex.  It's like a story without sub plots.  One can mow the lawn, or tinker in the garage while smoking it, and it reminds one that one is smoking a pipe with very little thought about it.  My wife says she likes the aroma of Captain Black Original.  

Will Captain Black Original swashbuckle either Tropical Export or Autumn Evening?  No, but I might want to keep some on hand, like one would keep just any good beer just to have in the fridge.  And it's not really expensive, but certainly not the cheapest,  It's worthy enough to always keep on hand.  Sometimes one just wants to smoke a pipe.  Some might suggest a cheap cob pipe for cheap tobacco, but this is more than just a cheap tobacco.  It's like finding at a wine tasting event, the best might not be the most expensive.  A lot of care goes into making this tobacco what it is.  

I'm smoking my Peterson System pipe with Captain Black Original this morning.  Maybe to the English Ph.D. it's cheap tobacco.  But to some of us who have had the best, we accept it for what it is.  It's a darn good value for the price.  After working my way through this can of tobacco, I'll buy more just to keep it on hand.  Sometimes I just want to smoke a pipe.  On this Sunday morning it's what I feel like doing.  This will suit me just fine.  Just like a good Hemingway story.  Thank you for your time and Peace to all of you.
