It's About Life
I was thinking yesterday about what this blog should be. It's still primarily about pipe smoking, but I decided it is about life. I read my news feed daily. There are so many things I read that could be of interest, but sometimes I just want to write about life. We win when we choose to live. My goal here is to give my readers something to begin their day. I COULD choose about politics or religion, but my goal is to entertain more and make you think less. But in the end there might be something you can think about.
I could write about the 20 foot crocodile seen swimming under a pier in Miami, for example and write about the crocodiles in Florida. But really, there are all kinds of critters here in Florida including Eastern Diamondback rattlesnakes like the one that bit an Amazon driver the other day as he delivered a package to the front porch of a customer. He's fine now, but he had to call 911 for help.
Or I could write about that Florida man or some Karen who got upset for no reason. There's always something here in Florida to write about. As they used to say on Saturday Night Live, there's always something. There are times I might rather write about what is on my mind. But there are times when I don't want something on my mind. So, I enter into a Zen-like state of relaxing and I don't want something on my mind.
Sometimes I don't want to know what's going on in the world. Today is one of those days. I have been watching reaction videos of GenXer's listening to a song from the 60's for the first time and I enjoy their reactions to music I grew up with and still listen to today. I am amazed how good the music was back then that is still just as good today. There was just so much good music to come out from the 60's that is just as good to first time listeners today as it was to my generation back then.
The golden age of music was from the mid 60's to about the mid 70's and I heard it all when the music was first released. And it still wows the kids of today as it did us back then. I grew up in an era of the best music. We didn't have Autotune and all the electronics producing music today. Performers back then put themselves on stage and simply performed. Perhaps it's the Righteous Brothers that come to mind or the Danish Orchestra performing the theme to the movie The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.
My wife and I discussed those Spaghetti Westerns, as they were called, staring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef with his now famous pipe, and Eli Wallach. Kids today don't know why that guy is hanging from the ceiling as the orchestra performed that now iconic piece of music. You have to know the movie to understand. But my generation understands these things that ate so odd to first time listeners. But it's just so fun to see these kids as overwhelmed today as we were back then as we heard the music the first time.
Some things are classic and not just the Beatles. There was just so much good music that came from that era and for us old timers, it's great to see kids wowed today as we were back then.
Well, of course I'll segue into pipe smoking. Some things don't change and I thank God they don't. My generation could be blamed for a lot that is wrong today, but my generation did some good. We failed in many ways, but in some ways we changed what we could. But some problems don't fade with time. That is why I smoke a pipe. It allows me time to reflect back on that which is good like smoking a pipe. There are fewer of us today that smoke a pipe, but those of us who do, still enjoy it as it was enjoyed back in the day.
Today i chose the Churchwarden pipe my sons gave to me as a birthday gift. I now have the tin of Cellar Reserve my son gave to me. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
