Make the Chili
My wife shared the following with my yesterday. We just don't know. Life is short. Two golfing buddies were on the links. The first asked the second what he was doing for dinner. The second said his wife wanted him to stop off at the store for some cornbread and chili, but he didn't want to. They walked a bit and the first said, "Make the chili." The second thought for a moment and decided that he'd make the chili. Why? 'Cause life is short. When the wife wants to watch TV together or go to the pool, you do it.
Why? Life is short. One never knows when one will lose a mate. You just do it. Same goes with friendships and family. You just do it. So, his thinking about doing something his wife wants to do, he thinks to himself to just make the chili. Same thing. Life is about making the chili. That can be said of anything a spouse wants to do. You just do it because life is too short. And one just doesn't know.
We can apply this to friendships, family, or those close to us, or even a stranger. We just don't know. Anyone in your life might not be here tomorrow. A smile is a gift that keeps on giving. A gesture of kindness. We just don't know how we can impact a life. Life is too short for the Karen's of this world. But it begins with a spouse. Then it's outward from there. Life is too short to be selfish. If you aren't here tomorrow what would others say about you, especially the one who knows you the best?
How would you like to be remembered? As we get older we understand better than we did when we were younger and more carefree. We can put our phones down and listen. We can set aside out petty differences and squabbles. Life is too short. That extends to family and friends. It extends to strangers. Life is too short.
Maybe for me, I have to put down my pipe. Maybe I have to force myself oit of my chair. Sure relaxing with a pipe is pleasurable. All meaningful and not so meaningful things in life take work. Just make the chili. You never know what simple gestures can do to make someone's day. Sure, we can say for a spouse we'll make the chili. Just make the chili! Thank you for your time today. You made your chili by spending time with me and for that I thank you and Peace to each one of you.
