Swearin' to the Oldies

I could bring up that I have been channeling Jimmy Buffett in the past couple of days.  My wife brought up the subject of Richard Simmons aa I was listening to music from the 60's and 70's as I sweltered in the Florida heat.  She asked what his video was called.  I said I was sweating here on the lanai listening to the oldies.  It seems everyone had some kind of exercise video back in the 80's and 90's.  Richard Simmons had a name for his--Sweatin' to the Oldies, and numbered each one.  I think he got up to about fifteen or so.  But it seems everyone had some kind of aerobics exercise video.  I could start listing them from memory.

But it was Olivia Newton John's song, Let's Get Physical, that capitalized on the exercise craze.  Then Suzanne Sommers had her Thigh Master and videos associated with that.  A lot of night owls stayed up watching her infomercials.  We have since learned the Thigh Master did nothing but make a lot of women tired.

As I sit on the lanai and smoke my pipe, I don't need Richard Simmons.  It is hot and humid here in SW Florida.  I lose a lot of weight just sitting out here.  All one needs is 90 degrees with humidity levels of about 90%.  And that is sitting in the shade!  I try not to do much outdoors in this heat and humidity.   At his heaviest Richard Simmons weighed 268.  He says he loves food these days and has not made a public appearance since 2016.  I just weighed myself and am under 200.  I'll just leave it at that.

I can remember doing jumping Jack's with Jack LaLane.  These days I live a pretty sedate life, as I am outside five ir six hours a day on average  But I find the heat here makes me pretty tired by mid-afternoon on most days.  It seems to me that with all Simmon's done with his life, he's entitled to whatever retirement he wants and can eat any foods he wants to eat.  In fact, he doesn't have to do anything.  I don't care whether he's trim or overweight.

He introduced a whole generation to exercising and have fun while doing it.  His energy was infectious.  Frankly, I never got into Richard Simmons and found him to be a bit much.  So, I'm an oldie listening to the oldies and sweating quite a bit.  But I say to myself as I sweat under the Florida sun that I won't be shoveling snow come January.  I might be lounging on a beach instead.

I am on the lanai this morning with my Savinelli Aurthor pipe smoking some Caribbean Blue Wynne instead while I finish my morning coffee.  And I'm listening to Jimmy Buffett. I'm not sweating yet in the cool of the morning breeze.  I thank you for your time.  Peace to each one of you.

Dave
