The Usual Suspects
I watched quite a bit of college football this past weekend and yes, the usual suspects all won. But like every year there were unranked trams that were surprising. I won't go into detail, because most of you don't care. It just takes awhile for me to get back into college football and the pros don't do much for me. Every season for football I'll wonder if I should even care. It seems as I get older I am that much more removed from the excitement of football altogether.
I know some of you care, but instead of watching games I'll check the final scores, which team is the home team, and the margin of wins and losses. I often like to see how Vegas does against the spreads. But since I often don't care enough to sit through whole games, I'll often want to know about predictions and outcomes. There were some rules changes that shortened the games, but now fans are complaining about that time being filled with TV commercials.
It's just that the transfer portals and rules changes have given more power to TV viewing than the teams themselves. I just hate to see so much TV money given to college football. It too has changed and in my thinking, not for the better. The playing for the glory is gone. Now individuals play in hopes of getting into the NFL. The team play has lost its emphasis. And it seems this makes it harder for coaches to coach.
I don't know, but every year I ask myself more and more whether I care about football all together. I'm not sure I do. I miss the champions of the Big 10 playing the champions of the Pac 10 in the Rose Bowl. Next year the Big 10 expands again and the Pac 12 will be two teams next year after the re-alignments. Then the playoffs will include 16 teams. I'm not sure it even matters much any longer. I'm not sure I care. But still I'll probably watch, but probably not as much.
Announcers talk about the NFL draft and who will play on Sundays. College football has become the minor league of the NFL. Even the announcers aren't sure where they'll be in a week with a few broadcasting both NFL and collegiate games. Colleges don't seem to care because they are raking in the big bucks from broadcasting rights. The local college networks are relegated to broadcasting games that don't seem to matter much in the rankings.
I don't know, but every year it's different. I used to get excited about the Rose Bowl, but now we won't know who will play in the Rose Bowl, but unless it's a championship game the Rose Bowl will just be another game. Here is when I segue into smoking my pipe. It doesn't change. I smoke my pipe on the lanai with the same scenery day after day. I like that. Sure it's a rotation of my pipes and the tobacco choices are limited, but my thoughts here are different every day. And today it's college football. I'm just not sure I care as much this year. Maybe I don't.
But I care which pipe I am smoking today and it's my Nording Number 3 pipe with my Captain Black Original. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
