Okay, I'm not a whiskey drinker, but the top tasters of wines, whiskey, and other spirits got together for the autumnal world event for 2023 and handed out their awards. I won't go into detail about how the winning Whiskey is made, but it comes from The Craft Irish Whiskey Company which took great care in creating the winning Whiskey for 2023. The Whiskey in question is called The Dorn and sells for $223 a bottle, which according to world Whiskey prices for the finest Whiskey is quite reasonable.
The aging process begins in Oak Whiskey barrels, where it is aged for three years, then it is moved to Bourbon Oak barrels where it is aged another four years. For a Whiskey to be aged only seven years and win top honors is quite rare. Usually one might think it has to be at lest twelve years old. But if this Whiskey is purchased seven years old, conceivably it would only be that much better in another five to eight years.
I'm not a Whiskey drinker, but a few of you might be, so I thought I would write about this today. I wrote about aging tobacco and like fine wines and whiskey, some things just get better with age. I'm mostly a Rum drinker, but it takes me over a year to through a bottle of Rum. I just don't drink much, and even with wine, I'll have a glass or two in one week. I can count on one hand how many shots of Whiskey I've had in my lifetime. And those have all come in the past few years.
But the article fascinated me because this years winning Whiskey is only seven years old. It's so unusual for a prize Whiskey to be so young, plus the price, while expensive is relatively cheap for a prize Whiskey.
I'll also drink Cognac, but again, it takes me a long time to get through a bottle. Some might suggest that $223 is not affordable, when maybe the best affordable whiskey is around $50. But keep in mind that for tasters from all over the world are not paying anything to taste the best spirits. So price to them does not matter. I don't know how many bottles will be sold at $223, when there are excellent whiskeys that are sold for a much cheaper price.
Tobacco is no different. A four ounce tin of Plum Pudding Special Reserve sells for about $40. An ounce and a half of Captain Black Original is about $8.50. Most 100g tins of tobacco sell for around an average of $12. A hundred grams is about 3.5 ounces. Some tins are only 50g at about the same price. It just depends. So, maybe four ounces at about $10 an ounce isn't all that much. On average four ounces of most any tobacco in bulk is about $10.
Prices of good Whiskey can average between $200-300 a bottle. Prices of most anything are relative. A good Whiskey is sold at about $25. So, it's all relative. A good Dunhill pipe, for example, is about $500. My most recent pipe was purchased for $115. It's not a Dunhill, but is still a good pipe. So, there you go. If one just wants to get drunk on a bottle of Whiskey, Wild Turkey can be had for less than $10. It just depends. Today it is my $125 Sherlock Holmes pipe, which has become one of my favorites, with the last of my Rum and Maple. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
