A Different Number One
Yes, I wrote about another less expensive Dunhill the other day, but referred to this pipe. If there is just one pipe I could own and not worry about cost, the above photo is that pipe. I get a VIP discount on Smoking Pipes of 15% off all Dunhill pipes, which makes this pipe a measely $964.75 instead of a regular price of $1,134, and a few hundred more than the Dunhill pipe I wrote about the other day. So this is my Holy Grail of pipes. Now my wife would say it's just a pipe dream, but if I start saving for it now, I could get it before I'm 90. But of course I jest.
Number one, I'm not sure I REALLY want it; and secondly, I'd buy it if money were no object, which might be true of most any pipe I write about here. The above pipe is a luxury item, as anything expensive is a luxury. First of all, I like bent stem pipes. Secondly, the band is made from the finest of silver. And maybe not necessarily is the best feature, but it possesses the largest bowl of most any Dunhill pipe. It is a lot of pipe to hold on one's hand and it just has that big pipe feel.
This is that one pipe one would choose to relax with in that old leather over stuffed chair in that old Mahogany wood paneled office smoking the Old Professor pipe tobacco. One could say that maybe it's an old guy's pipe. But a distinguished old guy. The owner of this pipe is old money. No question about it.
This is the pipe to which I was referring when I said it was called Dunhill's Dress pipe. This is what James Bond would have smoked wearing his tux in the Monte Carlo Casino, if indeed James Bond smoked a pipe. One might say that this pipe is THE Dunhill of all Dunhill pipes. This pipe would be the very most expensive pipe I would smoke. I just can't see paying more for any pipe and smoking it. This pipe would be my limit.
Every Dunhill pipe ist7 100% handmade as Rolls is made my hand. Machinery is involved, but the craftsmanship is all by hand. And an owner of a Rolls or at least who could afford one, will more than likely buy this pipe. Unless it is purchased by newer money who just wants to show off at the local pipe club. There are always those guys who have credit on some credit card and max it out buying this pipe just to show it off. I always say to never buy a pipe on credit. If you dont have the money for a pipe either save for it, or just buy something you can afford.
This is why a first pipe is usually not an expensive pipe and why a Dr. Grabow pipe is a good first pipe. I could afford a better first pipe, but I only bought what I could afford. Anyone who buys this pipe more than likely can afford it. This is true of most any Dunhill pipe. As I wrote here the other day the best value for any pipe purchase is about $150. I'm smoking my new Peterson Churchwarden pipe this morning that I bought for less than a hundred. I really don't need more pipes, but it seems every pipe smoker never has enough pipes. There is always the next pipe. For me, at least, the pipe pictured above ain't it. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
