A Dunhill Pipe
I was going to write about Boxing Day, but decided on this post instead. I thought I might get a pipe for Christmas, but imagine my surprise upon seeing this! The above pipe is a Christmas gift from the family. It is a 1982 refurbished Dunhill Bent Rhodesian pipe. Brand new this pipe is around $1200, but it is an Estate pipe. My wife says I can now go to the cigar bar with a Dunhill pipe. I was instructed to open this gift as the last of all the gifts yesterday, as this was from my wife and my two sons. I knew it was a special gift before I opened it.
This pipe came in its own Dunhill box and I knew it was indeed a very special gift. I was careful to open the box and of course, when seeing it, I knew what to expect. They didn't pay close to the amount it would cost new, but knew it was expensive, regardless. It has been carefully restored to like-new condition and my wife said I can now show off the white Dunhill dot.
I didn't expect a Dunhill pipe as a gift, but the surprise was immediate, because I knew. It came with all the documentation needed in case I were to sell it myself, but no, this pipe will be smoked. But not with a cheap Aromatic tobacco. In fact, I have already made one choice of tobacco for it, although a number of English blends would suit this pipe just fine. I'm not sure an Aromatic blend will come close to this pipe.
Old Professor would be perfectly suitable for this pipe, but I put in my wish list for Smoking Pipes an English blend by Ashton called Artisan's Blend which I know my wife won't like. But I can think of any number of blends that are suitable for this pipe. But not Autumn Evening or Tropical Export. I doubt seriously that any Aromatic will come close to this pipe.
Another blend that would be suitable for this pipe is Peterson's Nightcap. Dunhill used to be a pipe tobacco blender, but most of their blend recipes have been sold to the Peterson Pipe Company. Dunhill had so many blends and some pipe smokers say that Peterson has been true to the Dunhill blends. Peterson 965 would be another good blend to smoke in this pipe. But really, when it comes to English blends the list is practically endless.
I'm not smoking this pipe today as I am in the process of creating my next tobacco order. But a fine English is now on my radar as I begin thinking about what I want to put in this pipe. Not just any tobacco will do. I'm not saying this pipe deserves the very best, but it does deserve a fine English blend. I wish to thank my family for such a thoughtful gift. I am indeed a very blessed man. Today I am smoking my Gettysburg pipe with some Red River blend. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
