I'd Rather Be Santa

Well, I can't be.  But it's a nice thought.  I just love the Santa Claus myth, especially this time of year.  My wife says it doesn't seem like the season, because she hasn't decorated yet.  She says she'll do that at my son's house.  I'm giving my son fair warning.  But I got to thinking that giving gifts is best.  I'd just rather be Santa.  If I didn't smoke a pipe or imbibe in alcohol, I wouldn't have much of a Christmas list as most dads don't.  Dads are so hard to buy for.  I used to be involved in buying Christmas gifts for the kids, but like most parents who give gifts to their kids; dad's are clueless until the kids open their gifts.  Dad's have this kind of fake knowing expression while moms grin ear to ear.

It's a lot of work for Santa to deliver all those gifts in 24 hours.  It's funny, but in my own way I STILL want to believe in Santa.  It was enjoyable until an older brother told me Santa wasn't real.  Somehow I still want to believe in Santa, or maybe to believe in Santas.  As an adult we learn giving is best.  I think it comes naturally to being an adult, because in giving we keep the spirit alive.

Of course it's parents and grandparents that keep the myth of Santa going.  It seems I never really believed in Santa, but I still like the imagery of Santa even today.  And although I wrote about Santa's clay pipe and his smoking herbs, it doesn't matter that I don't believe in Santa.  I enjoy the myth of Santa.  I don't smoke a pipe today because of Santa.  As a kid I never gave it a thought.  I thought Sanra was Santa and he could do whatever he wished.

Christmas is about traditions and building Christmas memories.  I said Jesus was born in April, but just try changing Dec. 25 to a different date for Christmas.  An April date is so close to Easter.  Christmas is about pine trees, snow, and all that goes with winter.    Although I have wondered what Santa does south of the northern tropics.  Even here in Florida maybe he changes into his red Speedo!  I've wondered what he does when there is no snow.

We just aren't allowed to think too logically about Santa and all that stuff that goes with Christmas.  We are to just enjoy the season with friends and family no matter where we are.  My favorite patt of the Christmas Vacatiion movie is when Clark Griswald gets stuck in the attic and he finds the old home movie of a Christmas past.  Everyone needs fond memories of Christmases long ago, but bad memories are had for some.

Everyone who has fantasies of Santa and Christmas wants to have good memories.  I can't be a Santa to the world--just my corner of it and this is true even today.  No one can be Santa.  But my thinking is there just can't be too many of them.  The world needs all the Santa's it can get.  There just isn't always enough of them to go around.  I just do my best.  I like smoking my pipes this time of year and I'm thinking if Santa were real, he would too.  Today it is my Savinelli St. Nicholas pipe with some Christmas Spice tobacco while listening to Manheim Steamroller.  All I need Is a fuller beard and maybe a bit mote padding. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
