Just Another Day?
Is Christmas just another day on the calendar? The Holiday Season generally starts on Thanksgiving and continues through New Year's Day. But Christmas Day is THE highlight of the Season. I enjoy thinking about Santa lounging on a Florida beach in his red Speedo after the Holidays are over. But why? Because Santa is relaxing. The Holiday's can bring out the best in people, but at times it can bring out the worst.
Maybe for me, at least, there is something appealing about lounging on a secluded beach in a red Speedo as my idea of total relaxation. That image appeals to me. But I know that I can't spend all my time lounging on a secluded beach. But it seems to me that no one is more stressed by the Holiday's than Santa. We can think of him as this jolly old elf who lives for Christmas.
Of course, Santa is a myth. I understand this perfectly. But most everyone has images of Santa at this time of year. And everyone aspires to be like Santa this time of year. We do our Christmas shopping and images of Santa are everywhere. We can't escape Santa no matter where we go or what we do. And I would dare say no adult actually believes in Santa Claus. But images of Santa are everywhere. Parents seek to be the perfection of Santa by giving their kids the things they want for Christmas.
This is why Christmas can be frantic for parents as they think about their budgets and what they can afford. Christmas can be the most stressful time of year for many parents. There is a collective sigh of relief when it's all over and the bills for Christmas have not yet arrived. Then those images of Santa lounging on a secluded beach in the Florida sunshine can be so appealing. We just want to get away when it's all over.
Christmas doesn't have to be like this, but for many it is. I think as I've grown older, I like solitude. Maybe I spend too much time alone, and a secluded beach sounds nice, but like solitude it's not forever. It's a snapshot in my mind, but not a movie. And it's the same for Santa. It might be for just an afternoon. It's not a life. Santa has many things to do and a lot is on his mind. He can't stay there. Life goes on. And so does the coming year.
Vacations are nice, but they are temporary. Everyone has a life, including Santa. The image of Santa lounging on a secluded beach in his red Speedo is just an image. Just like any fantasy takes us away from reality if just for a bit. I don't spend all my time in seclusion smoking my pipe. It is for relaxation. Today it is my "haunted" Gettysburg pipe with some Tropical Export. I thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
