Nothing New Today

What can be said about Christmas that has not been said?  Even in regard to Santa there is nothing new.  Christmas is really more about the past than it is about the future.  We probably spend more time remembering and reminiscing than we spend looking forward.  What's new at Christmas is what's old.  Maybe except for that hot new toy every kid wants for Christmas.  There is always that one special gift every kid seems to want.

Although now it might be a game for an XBox or Playstation.  Or that new gaming system that just came out.  But as Christmas sermons are being prepared and words about Christmas being crafted, many are wondering about what can be said that has not been said.  Maybe the best about Christmas is that nothing new needs to be said.  We want to remember, not forget.  We want to be reminded of what Christmas is.  Remind us with words that have been said.

We don't want a new or different Santa.  We don't want to replace the shepherds or the Angels.  We want to remember the Holy Family.  We want to remember the Christmas trees and the star on top.  We just want to be reminded with old images and ideas.  We don't want new words about Christmas.  We don't want new ideas about Christmas.  Christmas is about traditions.  It about old values.  We really don't want Christmas to change.  We want to keep Christmas with old fashioned memories.

We don't want to replace those images of a Currier and Ives Christmas with modern art.  We don't want those old carols replaced by new songs no one has heard of.  We wnat the traditions of Christmas.  So what if the words have been said?  Christmas is the only time of year we don't want new words or new ideas.  We like the old stuff.  We don't want anything about Christmas to be new except the gifts.  Christmas is all about tradition and old images and old carols.  Even Scrooge was an old man.

We're comfortable with anything old about Christmas.  Santa is an old man.  Images of the manger are ancient memories.  We just don't want new ideas about Christmas.  So, don't give us new ideas.  We tried replacing the live Christmas trees with aluminum ones and that didn't even work.  We just don't want new ideas or images about Christmas.  We like the old stuff about Christmas.  We like the traditions of Christmas.  We don't want to replace the Norman Rockwell Christmas with something new.

So, I won't give you new images of Christmas today.  You get to keep Christmas as you remember it to be.  It's a day with family and sharing with friends.  Even my pipes are old.  Santa has been smoking a pipe for centuries.  So have I it seems like.  Maybe the tobacco has changed some, but it's still tobacco.  No there's nothing new today.  Just an old fashioned Christmas the way you remember it to be.  Thank you for your time, Peace to each one of you; and a Very Merry Old Fashion Christmas Day!

Dave
