About Longevity

How do we live a long life?  A WW II woman veteran who is 101, says the key to longevity is to drink all the booze you can drink.  And she isn't kidding when she says this.  She's actually serious.  I won't go into detail about her comments, but I have wondered how some people who are rock stars today from the 60's are still alive.

A good example of this is Willie Nelson who will be 91 this April.  He said one night after a performance with Waylon Jennings, the two of them drank 52 cases of beer.  But that is just one time he remembered.  And rockers from the 60's have all had hard lives of booze and drugs, but still there are many who never made it as far as Willie Nelson has.

I read this article with some interest, but it seems I am advocating for alcohol consumption, which I'm not.  I was watching an old Match Game episode that featured Betty White, who probably never had a drink in her life who lived to be 99.  One woman who lived to be a hundred, said her secret to longevity was to eat eggs every day.

The fact is, I'm not sure there is a secret to longevity.  George Burns made it to a hundred and he was never seen without a cigar.  How much he actually smoked cigars could be debated, but back in the day when smokers smoked on set, cigars, cigarettes and pipes were commonly seen.

My point is that I am not certain what one can do or not do for longevity.  But I might suggest that a 101 year old woman giving advice like this might carry some weight for some people.  But the fact is I am not sure there is one secret to longevity.  What all these people prove is that longevity just is not one thing, but that one thing is evident.  If you do what you enjoy doing you probably will live a happier longer life and that is all there is to it.

My pipes just might bring me longevity, because I enjoy them so much, like George Burns and his cigars.  Some lives end after a spouse of many years passes away.  Some people simply don't have the quality of life as others do.  Many factors cause death and there are factors attributed to life.  We just don't know, which is why we live in the moment, because this moment is all we have.  I'm not going to compare my life to others.  It is uniquely my own life.  I'm smoking my Dunhill pipe this morning with some Captain Black Original while drinking a cup of hot black coffee; and I'll simply enjoy doing this.  Thank you for your time this morning and Peace to each one of you.
