Hobbies?
I put a questiion mark in todays title because my wife seems to think I need one to keep myself busy. I'm thinking about it as I have an Aston Matrin DB5 Lego car one of my son's gave me as a Christmas gift a few years back. I could be putting that together, but I need some space to work on it. The DB5 is rather large as the box it came in is quite large. I thought about keeping it in the box as it came, but shipping it from NY to here damaged the box, so I decided to open the box and prepare a space where I can work on it.
The kit is designed for those over 18 and I'm thinking too there might be other car kits similar to the DB5 that might interest me. But finding an out of the way place to work on these might not be easy, however we prepared a table for it and I can begin soon. I did tell her that I have my phone and I'm out of the way to smoke my pipe and I do have my pipes and tobacco as my hobby.
A lot of guys my age have their man caves or they have a garage where they might tinker with classic cars. Cars can always be hobbies and maybe car kits like my Lego DB5 are for those who are younger. And maybe I need something to just take my mind off things, but it used to be that computers were a hobby.
I used to be a computer geek, but no more. Computers these days are so reliable they don't need to be tinkered with as before. And my computer skills have tapered off sharply in recent years. I haven't lost interest in computers, but they simply don't need the attention they once did. And now SD cards have replaced drives. Even DVD players have been replaced by Netflix, etc.
I have a CD collection, but now we just listen to Spotify. I search for all my music there and create my own Playlists. I've lost interest in watching movies preferring instead watching YouTube. I like to listen to old radio shows and still watch old TV shows, my favorite still being M*A*S*H. My wife and I were discussing the old TV show Taxi the other day and we talked about the cast characters of that show with who we believe the best was Christopher Lloyd as Rev. Jim, the burnt out Harvard grad who was a former druggie.
We talked about the cast of Taxi and how good they all were. There are a lot of good TV shows back then and I'll go to an app and still watch them. There just isn't much need to keep DVD's of old TV shows. They're everywhere on the Internet. Same with radio shows. They're found everywhere.
Some guys like to tinker with old electronics with tube stuff the most favorites. I'm an old guy that likes the old stuff. And I've found so many interesting vids on most anything I like on YouTube. I could get more active on social media and find those who like similar things who are not just old guys. The younger generations like old stuff too. Maybe I've just become more passive in my viewing pleasure, but I'm fascinated by old stuff. Often it brings back fond memories.
I like old memories. And maybe that is why I like my pipes. They're old school and remind me of a time when most guys smoked pipes. And there was a time a guy could smoke his pipe most anywhere. Now we're relegated to mostly outdoors and unfortunately a lot of times by ourselves. There are pipe clubs and cigar bars, but they're not not the same. Maybe I spend too much time by myself without the interaction of social media.
But I have plenty to keep me busy, including this blog, and I'm never too far from my wife who often needs my help with something. We no longer have our own place where I can have my own man cave, etc. But actually, I'm quite happy with the way things are. Today it is my Perterson Sherlock Holmes pipe with some Aahton Artisan's Blend and a cup of hot black coffee. I thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
