Drama in the Making
There is nothing I enjoy more than quiet mornings with my first cup of coffee and a good English tobacco. March Madness in college basketball begins this week with the NCAA bracket announced Sunday evening after the conclusion of the tournaments for the various conferences. Then the following Wednesday the real madness begins. I've commented on all that here but I'm not going to pay too much attention to the first 33 games. Never-mind the NIT. I don't care who's the best 66th team. I could never understand the meaning of the NIT.
But when it gets down to the Sweet Sixteen, I begin to start paying attention and by the Elite Eight, I'll start choosing teams I want to see in Final Four. It just depends on who the Final Four might be. Of course I'm a Big 10 fan and I'm thinking Purdue might make it that far, but the money seems to be on UConn and maybe Houston in the final depending.
But the NCAA men's basketball is not all that predictable which is why no one ever gets a bracket right. There is always a Cinderella team that shows up every year. Gonzaga has been that team and always shows up in tournament play. I root for the Cinderella teams. Although a Cinderella team might be Illinois. Some team not be in the top 25 always seem to sneak in. That's why when filling out the brackets one has to guess the upsets. Some team always sneaks in.
That's what makes the NCAA tournament so interesting. UConn could get beat early. One just never knows. Ohio State is 6-1 under their new coach, but I'm wondering if they'll get in. Michigan will most likely go to the NIT - maybe. I'm thinking a Cinderella will be like Gonzaga. They're good enough for the top 25, but barely. A lot depends on end-of-season play. Maybe Alabama will be that team.
But guessing is what makes it fun. An unranked team could come from seemingly nowhere. Nebraska could be that team. Purdue might make it to the Final Four, but it seems right now it is at least Houston and UConn. Could they be upset? That's the guessing game. Not even Vegas can guess correctly. No one can. But there are those who hope when filling out brackets Monday and Tuesday. A lot of time will be spent filling out brackets.
It is said worker productivity is the least this time of year. Everyone wants to fill out brackets and watch to see how they did. I've done okay in the past by guessing, but I haven't paid much attention to basketball this year except to watch the rankings. A Cinderella team is usually some team that plays well at the end of the season and carry that play into the tournament. Pundits then start guessing as to which team that might be. Is there a team this year that can be that team? I just haven't paid enough attention to know.
I'm smoking my new Peterson pipe with some Captain Black Cherry tobacco and I'll watch some basketball next week and maybe a few Big 10 games this week. I just don't know enough to fill a bracket. I'll just watch the pundits complain about their brackets being busted. It happens every year, which is why so many watch. It's always drama in the making. Thank you for your time this morning and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
