Staying Abreast

I follow the news each day, but a lot of what I read I don't want to write about.  It seems most everyone has opinions about Taylor Swft these days.  It seems that she has motivated her Swifties to date hunks.  Never mind the 98 pound nerd, who's probably going to be rich.  We're talking hunks here.  She has a hunk of a boyfriend.  So, whatever she does, she's copied by millions of teenage girls.  If a Swiftie isn't dating a hunk, she's not one of the group.  I don't know what to say about this except, whatever.

My brother-in-law and I had a conversation not too long ago about advice we gave our kids about dating.  He has three girls and his advice to them was to avoid dating jocks and musicians.  Most musicians aren't built like jocks, but jocks and musicians think a lot alike about girls.  He didn't want those guys to break his girls' hearts.  Jocks and musicians are often heart-breakers.  And they both have egos that make them very self-centered and musicians are often dreamers.

So, whatever Swift does, the Swifties will do it too.  I'm just saying there will be a lot of broken hearts out there, but isn't that what Swft sings about?   Not that I'd know.

While we're on the subject, I read too that Elvis was cheap in paying his employees.  He lavished them with gifts of cars, houses, vacations, horses, and even loaned them money if things were tight at the end of the month, often not being repaid.  Elvis wanted his employees to be completely dependent on him and he wanted them to be happy.  I'm not sure what $250 a week is in today's money, but he didn't want to pay them much.  He wanted them to be completely dependent on him.

Pracilla Presley says Elvis was very generous to his employees and hated if they didn't like a gift.  One of his employees recently came out with a book describing his life with Elvis.  He says in his book that all Elvis' employees worked had to please him and that required long hours and hard work for little pay.  But they did it for his lavish gifts.

Musicians are indeed an odd lot.  Elvis was what Taylor Swift is today.  One is and one was successful musicians.  So, those are my thoughts this morning.  Nothing about pipe smoking and I suppose if my wife was worried about some young chick, her worries now are relieved.  I'm far from a hunk.  But not bad for being 72. I'm just fine the way I am.  A pipe adds a little mystery and it definitely makes me a little different.

I don't sit around and worry about what I don't have.  My devotion to meditating on many things is just right.  I give attention to that which matters most.  I have a lot of time for meditation, but I never think of time as being wasted.  Time on anything is an investment and not a waste.  I'm thinking my thoughts CAN change the world.  At least I WANT to believe this.  Whether anyone else thinks otherwise I'm not sure I care.  I do what I do until my Spirrit Guides say otherwise.   I'm smoking my Nording Number 2 pipe this morning, having begun today with a bowl of Yorktown with a cup of hot black coffee.   I have since moved on to Captain Black Original.  I thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
