Why the Easter Bunny

Today is Easter and today's post could be religious in nature.  But the religious about Easter is as well-known as the Easter Bunny.  But this post is about the Easter Bunny today.  Why an Easter Bunny and where does he come from?  We can compare the Easter Bunny to Santa Clause for Christmas.  He gives gifts to good Children.  But while the traditions of Christmas are ingrained in us, the Easter Bunny isn't.  We just know that colored eggs are a part of the Easter Traditiion; along with egg hunts and other games for children.

It all began with the early Pagans who had a festival of Eoster.  It was the Germans that were first known to celebrate Easter with a hare they called Oschter Haws.  Easter came to America in 1700 by the Pennsylvania Germans with their celebration of Easter and Oschter Haws.  It was celebrated for the children with what are now traditional celebrations.  It wasnt just to celebrate Easter religiously, but was a way for the children to be involved.

It began with the Easter Bunny leaving brightly colored eggs in nests for the children to find.  And over time here in the US, Easter has evolved to include chocolate Easter Bunnies, candy, small gifts, and of course the hidden colored eggs for the children to find.  It is said that 88% of US parents celebrate Easter in this way with their children.

There is a lot more to it than all this, but that is about the gist of it in an eggshell, so to speak.  Spring is a time of new growth and the start of the planting season, so of course Spring is about fertility.  It's about the start of the growing season.  But why a Bunny?  It just goes back to original Pagan traditiion of the hare.  Probably because bunnies are known to be prolific breeders.  And the eggs?  They are the symbols of new birth, again from Pagan traditions.

And of course Easter symbolizes the Christian ideal of Christ's resurrection and new Spiritual birth.  I won't get into all that.  The Easter Bunny is the Santa Claus of Easter.  It is said that E. B. White is often credited with the earliest renditions of the Easter Bunny as we know it today.

So, that is it for this morning.  It's my VERY brief history of Easter.  As a kid we often got new clothes to wear to church on Easter morning.  And we used to have Easter morning sunrise serves at a lake on Easter Sunday.  But these days I'm quite content to lounge around the house as I'm doing this morning.  As a Spiritual person I don't need special days to remember.  Every day is Christmas and Easter all rolled into one.  Of course, I'm smoking my Angel pipe this morning with some Sunrise English tobacco while drinking a cup of hot black coffee.  It is simply a beautiful Easter morning this morning here in SW Florida.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
