Some Things Never Get Old
I've been watching YouTube videos with famous quotes, mostly by men about life and living. Even at 72, I still find philosophical quotes fascinating and I'll read a quote and simply say it's better said than I can say it because I know this. Mark Twain sill might be most quotable because as a writer he just had a way with words. But some quotes aren't applicable to tofay, but a good quote holds the test of time.
Some writers don't make their observations known in books. Some things are said like a comedian's one-liners, like Rodney Dabgerfield saying, "Take my wife--please!" George Carlin is still incredibly quotable. I'm not sure it was Mark Twain who said, "Any woman can make a fool out of a man in twenty minutes." But the most foolish man, in my thinking, is the man who has never loved. It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. A stupid man has loved too many.
A lot of quotes deal with man/woman relationships. But there are quotes that just make one read it and it has to be thought about for quite a while. Like the twenty minute quote. Shakespeare is often quoted. But philosophical quotes about life and relationships are everywhere. Maybe West once said she never met a man she didn't love. She really wasn't that bawdy but it was her persona to be. It was a take-off from Will Rodgers who said he never shook hands with a man he didn't like. He either only shook hands with men he liked, or if a man shook his hand he liked him.
Some people are easy to love and some people are hard to like. Of course, I'm kind of rambling here, but sometimes I'll read a quote often about man/woman relationships and it will make me think. Some quotes are more than one bowl quotes. In otherwords, I put it in my pioe and smoke it. As they used to say rather sarcastically,"Put that in your pioe and smoke it." I've put a lot of things in my pipes. I just don't smoke a pipe. My wife will tell you, I can literally get lost in thought.
But I'd much rather be lost in thought with a pipe in my.mouth than a steering wheel in my hands. My wife often worried I wasn't paying attention to my driving. I can get easily distracted just by a simple thought. Too much thought makes me tired. And I can get tired by the same thought. I'm not OCD, but my brain can be. I work hard at organizing my thoughts. For some people it's about how many beers it takes to deal with a thought. For me it's more about bowls of tobacco.
I'm pretty relaxed by my third bowl. For some people a case of beer isn't enough. As some measure in beer, I measure by bowls. And of course, those who meditate measure in time. I learned long ago that smoking a pipe is the best way to think. Once I mastered the art of pipe smoking I learned how best to deal with life. I learned to relax with a pipe. My body can and my heart can, but it seems my mind just keeps going. The less input the better. There's already too much stuff in there. Today it is my Nording Number 2 pipe with some Captain Black Original and a hot cup of Guatamalan black coffee. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
