A Nice English Estate Pipe
Okay, so I'm partial to bent shaped pipes. I have a number of pipes in this style. This is reminiscent of my first pipe, which is a Jobey. This pipe is an English GBD pipe and is from the 1980's. It sells for $115 on Smoking Pipes website. It might be close in style to an Oom Paul pipe. It has a bird's eye grain that is favored by many pipe smokers because it is so different. GBD stands for Ganeval, Bondier, and Dominger, which began as a French company, but the pipes are now made in England. Cadogan now owns the company which also make Comoy pipes, but the quality is not the same.
However, that is not to say that GBD pipes don't hold their value. The above pipe is probably one of the better GBD pipes at $115, which makes this pipe worth every penny. It is said newer GBD pipes don't have the quality of the older estate pipes. This one certainly has the quality, although this photo is all I have to go by. I might not be interested in the newer GBD pipes, but I do have an interest in this one.
One might ask whether $115 is too much for this pipe. I would suggested any pipe around $100 is a good pipe. I would suggest to anyone that when it comes to pipes you get what you pay for. Even a clunker car can you from point A to point B. It's just a matter of how you want to get there. Cadillac was the standard at one time, but maybe now a clunker might be compared to a Lexus. And a good used Lexus might be a good Dunhill estate pipe. A good used Ferrari might be 75 grand. But it's still a Ferrari.
Value can be subjective, but in my opinion, the above pipe is like a good used Buick. This isn't a long post this morning, but it says all that's needed to be said. This is an estate GBD and that makes this a very nice pipe. Tofay it is my Dunhill pipe with Bayou Morning. My coffee this morning is a cup of hot back Guatamalan coffee. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
