My Jobey Pipe

I did a little research on my very first pipe and thought I could find a similarity to it, even on eBay, but I couldn't.  So, I thought, what the heck, I'll take my own photo.  I once did a whole series of my pipes on a previous blog that no longer exists.  But I decided to write about my first pipe.  As to whether I will write about any other pipe I own is a question I can't answer.  I can save myself a lot of thinking if I plan the next 40 posts around my collection of pipes, but as of now, I've decided not to do that.

If I can't think of anything to write about, I can always pull out a pipe, take a photo, and write about it.  But so far, I'd rather not.  I think I paid about $30 for this pipe in 1974, which was back then about $190 in today's money.  Today this pipe used might be anywhere from $50 to $100, but for a serious collector it might go for as much as $200, but I am thinking around $50.    I'm probably most careful with this pipe by not smoking it too much.

It's not too often I write about my own pipe, but my Jobey has been compared to be similar to an estate GBD.  This particular pioe was made in NYC where Jobey manufactured pipes until 2012 when the company was moved to France.  It began in the 1920's and was English until 1942.  That is when Jobey came to the US.  This particular pipe originated from its facilities in NYC.

Not much is known about Jobey, even its origin.  But pipe historians do their best in keeping records, although those records are spotty with smaller companies.  This particular pipe could be compared favoratively with the GBD pipe I wrote about the other day.

I had so many pipes to choose from when I shopped for this pipe.  Back then they had these cellophane sleeves that slipped over the stem of the pipe for sanitary purposes.  My memory is spotty, but I recall the tobacconist putting sleeves over several pipes.  Price was a factor as $30 was a lot back in 1974.  But my fiance then who is now my wife said she liked the detail on this pipe the best.  I tried several and looked in a mirror as I tried on each one.  This pipe was my final choice.

Why didn't I just go to a drugstore and buy a ten dollar Dr. Grabow?  I was thinking at the time that a college grad went to tobacconists for pipes and tobacco.  Just the average Joe bought Dr. Grabow pipes and tobaccos in drug stores.  I guess I was too proud and felt I had more money to spend.  Even today I have a Dr. Grabow pipe in my Amazon wish list that has been there for a year or so.  I dabble with the idea.

So, this is my first pipe.  Hope you enjoyed my reminiscing this morning.  In fact, I'm smoking this pipe today in honor of writung about it.  It's with some Old Professor pioe tobacco while drinking a hot cup of black Nicaraguan coffee.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
