A New Lighter
Okay, writung about a new lighter isn't much to write about, but I didn't bring a pipe lighter with me to NY. I have two Zippo pipe lighters I wasn't going to risk getting them through screening. One especially was a gift from my son and I wasn't going to risk losing it. But can I write a whole post about a Zippo lighter?
First of all, it's not a pipe lighter, and secondly, I'm not taking it back with me to Florida. I went on Amazon to find the cheapest lighter I could find. I found a can of lighter fluid here I left behind, so I didn't want a fancy lighter. I figure that ten bucks for a Zippo was going to be my price. The lighter I chose was a $20 lighter at half off. And it was the cheapest Zippo I could find.
I had been using just a plain old BIC lighter and figured it would last me until my new lighter arrived. A pipe lighter directs the flame downward into the bowl, but I find most any lighter or matches work just as well. This lighter is antique brass, but for ten bucks I figured it would work just fine. I prefer a pipe lighter, but I've even used grill lighters. Most anything with a flame will light a pipe, but my one lighter is the one I use the most.
My best pipe lighter has my initials on it with a little pipe emblem indicating it's for pipes. This brass one is just a regular lighter. But it works almost as well. It takes a little more effort to light the pipe, but many pipe smokers don't use a pipe lighter. I just couldn't find a pipe lighter for less than $20 and ten bucks was all I wanted to spend as I won't be taking it back with me. It's a nice looking lighter for ten bucks. And it works perfectly, but with just a bit more effort to get the flame to light the tobacco.
I used to use matches all the time when I smoked indoors, but matches aren't as effective outdoors. Most any Zippo will handle most any kind of breeze outdoors. I'm not a Zippo collector as some smokers have been collecting Zippo lighters for years. One pipe smoker on YouTube had a whole Zippo rack display just full of Zippo lighters. I bought my first Zippo pipe lighter a few years back and then received one as a gift. This is now my third that I will leave here, as I said earlier.
So, why a Zippo, you might ask. Well, first of all they are made here in the US. Secondly, they aren't expensive. And finally, they can be collectors' items. Zippo lighters aren't complicated and the company stands behind them. Now, I didn't think I could write a whole post on my new Zippo lighter, but having a good lighter is important for smoking a pipe, especially if one smokes outdoors as I do. I don't need anything other than just a good Zippo and this new lighter suits me just fine.
My pipe this morning is my Peterson System pipe that I lit with my Zippo, and my tobacco is Longbottom Leaf. My coffee this morning is hot, black Black Rifle Pumpkin Spice by the American Coffee Company coffee and really not much more to say. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
