A Polite Dinner

We are sharing our house with others while we are here, but we don't mind as the others basically sleep here.  We had grilled hamburgers with a couole who were Chinese from Toronto with their 16-year-old daughter who spoke very good English and translated for us.  Of course the conversation turned to their shared path with my wife and they wondered why I didn't share that path.  We said I kind of do, but I said I was basically Buddhist.

As we were talking the father said in Chinese to his daughter to say I sounded like a philosopher.  My wife and I both laughed.  I told the daughter to tell her father my degree is in philosophy.  I have some understanding of most philosophical thought and I believe Buddhism defines me best.  I care mostly about human life, which is essentially what Buddhists believe.  Then we talked about how we came together to share dinner with each other.

In some ways it was truly remarkable how we came together for that evening.  Both my wife and I find it remarkable we have this house here in NY.  There are many who would not have crossed our path if we stayed in Ohio.  It has been a most remarkable journey in many respects.  And how we came together to share that dinner that night.

Our journey really began with our son who moved to NYC in 2004.  What if we had not sold our home?  And what if we chose to remain in Ohio?  We might have a kind of nomadic life, but our path has taken us places we might not otherwise be with people we might not know.  And we almost didn't come to be here right now.  Both our sons might come here this month.  But our path brought us here right now.  What if I had not had my heart attack?  Would things be different?

We will never know.  And what about my Spirituality and I had remained in the Church?  We can ask so many questions.  There would be those we would not know as we know them now.  I remember everything my Spirit Guides told me 30 years ago.  They knew then, but there was only so much so much they could tell me then.  It's why it is so important I remember.  It was a two and one half hour conversation, but the most important parts I can't forget.

I work hard at keeping it all together.  I really can't explain why my pipes are so important to me, but they are part of it.  It's why in part this blog exists.  Most anyone wouldn't understand, but what is important is that I do understand.  My pioe today is my Peterson Irish Harp pipe with some Jamaica Rum tobacco and my coffee this morning is still an unknown, but black and hot.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
