It's That Time
I can't ignore the Republican Conventiin this week as I saw some of yesterday's events as they were televised live. I'll give the Dems equal time as I have no political thoughts one way or another. I found the Teamsters President speech for the most part quite interesting. What he said about Amazon being the world's fourteenth largest economy with a valuation of two trillion dollars fascinating. And they use UPS, which has 350,000 Teamster members.
I could now write exclusively about Amazon, but I won't. When I think of Teamster President's, George Meany comes to mind along with Jimmy Hoffa. The Teamsters themselves could be more than enough material to write an entire post. But the fact he spoke to the Republicans is news in and of itself. But the fact he was invited to speak and he accepted is probably the news of the day.
But the Dems are watching the event as closely as many Republicans are doing throughout the week. I won't comment on it any further except to say the convention season begins the campaigns and while I won't take sides and avoid politics it is news I could comment on them throughout the week and next month. But avoiding the appearance of playing politics I won't unless something happens that is news in and of itself, but the conventions are news.
Years ago the convention halls would be filled with smoke from both cigarettes and cigars along with smoke from the occassiinal pipe. It might be news today to say there is no smoke filled convention hall as it was back in the day. When the FDA realized how bad second hand smoke was to so many, smoke filled room began to dissappear in the late 80's and early 90's. But I remember those telecasts from days of yore and I can remember those smoke filled halls.
The younger generatiion wouldn't remember televised events that had to filter through clouds of smokes in stadiums and arenas. I can remember seeing George Meany with his cigars. And even Gerald Ford went to the conventions with his pipe. He is probably the last president we had who smoked a pipe. Clinton was known to have smoked cigarettes, and I believe Obama wmoked some, but I don't associate any smoking with any president up to Gerald Ford.
Of course only those who smoke today remember that far back. But I do. I believe it was back in '88 which may have been the first without some smoke in the air. After that conventions were clean of smoke. I remember watching the conventions as a kid and my father commenting on all the smoke in the air. That is another story in and of itself.
I won't comment any further on the proceedings from yesterday. Those of you who are political junkies will get your fix in the next month. But as for me, I'll watch some, see the highlights, and follow what the pundits are saying, but felt, I had to at least comment on the fact that the convention season is upon us. I worry most about any violence during the campaigns. I think that is on the minds of many. But I'll relax with my pipe and today it is my Peterson Irish Harp pipe with some Haunted Bookshop. My coffee this morning is 365 Hometown Blend City Roast from Amazon. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
