At One Time

I was once into exotic sports cars thinking a car I wanted to own was an Aston Martin DB9.  But those days are long gone.  As most of you know we no longer own a car, but we'll borrow our son's Mustang convertible and often drive with the top down unless it's too hot and sunny.  But we can get by with ride sharing services.  My wife says if we need a car we can pick something up as we don't drive much these days.

But the other day I got to thinking that a little two-seater convertible would be fun to own.  Something like a Mazda Miata MX-5 could suit us quite well as we don't need much space.  And a five-speed manual would be fun and cheap to own.  I wouldn't buy it new, but just something to get us around.  But my thinking is that something like that just might be too small for my wife.  I just don't know.

Sometimes I'll still miss my MGB-GT.  It wasn't a convertible, but that car was a blast to drive.  It was the quintessential little red sports car of every man's dream and the MGB was the sports car every man could afford.  It seems everyone had at that time owned at least one.  I learned quickly that if one owned an MG, it couldn't be an only car.  But in my case it was.  And I was constantly working on it.

An MX-5 is NOT an MG in that regard.  An MX-5 with a manual transmission is bulletproof.  These cars are almost indestructible, but their small size makes them very fragile in collisions.  They're probably wrecked before they get worn out because they are very small cars.  But still they are very safe for the occupants as Mazda has always prided itself on safety.  Because they are so responsive they avoid a lot of collisions as well.

Maybe my son's Mustang is as close as I'll ever get to another sports car, but in my thinking, it's no longer an Aston Martin, but a Mazda.  And you know that is okay.  I can't help but drop the roof of my son's car and not drive it without a smile on my face.  Maybe a Miata would just be too impractical to own, but no sports car is ever practical.  I find my son's Mustang still impractical at times.  But if I were to own just one more car it seems to me that a Miata just isn't that impractical.

It won't hold much in the way of stuff, but can get us around.  It just depends on whether my wife can even get into one.  I'm not sure she can.  But I'm not swapping her for a woman that could.  For that, she can be thankful.  And probably, I can too.  This one is just fun this morning.  Not much to it, really, but I'm smoking my Boswell pipe this morning with Dave's Special Blend while drinking a hot cup of Stumptown Holler Mountain coffee just thinking about something different this morning.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
