Old Ads
My wife liked my post about old things we remember. And a lot of what I remembered was good. But there was some bad things back then that are different today. Back in the 50's and 60's and even into the 70's advertising in both magazines and TV were incredibly sexist. I don't have the space in one post to list all the ads, but really they can be summed by saying that a lot of advertising was incredibly sexist.
I 've mentioned my wife lit my pipe for me just a few times, but these days she can barely tolerate the aroma of my most flavorful Aromatic tobacco. She liked everything I said in that post except my mentioning Old Professor pipe tobacco. Ironically, I like Old Professor the most and she hates it the most. So, when I mentioned it, she did too. But back in the day a man smoking a pipe was his lifestyle. Today, it's a hobby, and not just for men.
But too back in the day, no woman could walk down the street without some pervert pinching her butt. Today that would be sexual assault. But back then it's how women were treated. And there are old men today that never got the memo. But I remember those days. And I remember the sexist advertising. It seems more sex took place in the kitchen than the bedroom. And so many househole appliances were advertised for men to buy women for Christmas. Hoover had an ad describing how happy she'd be with a new vacuum cleaner under the tree.
But that isn't all. It seems a lot of men divorced their wives if they couldn't make a decent cup of coffee. My wife would tell me to make my own and most mornings I do. But one ad showed a man spanking his wife for not making good coffee. A deodorant ad for women showed a secretary at her desk saying she used the product and her boss had yet to ask her out for lunch. But all this doesn't compare to how women were treated in clothing ads. A Haggar pants ad showed a man with his foot on a woman's head superimposed on a tiger skin rug.
But I don't know which products were most offensive. One ad for Cigarello little cigars showed a man blowing smoke in a woman's face saying that if a man smoked this and blew smoke in her face, she'd follow that man anywhere. All these ads were blatantly sexist, but as the Virginia Slim cigarette ad for women said, you've come a long way, baby. Nitot sure about calling a woman, "Baby," but women have come a long way. And thankfully men have too. I'm an old guy that has smoked a pipe for fifty years and I can be srxist about pipe smoking. I like women and try very hard not to be sexist about them. My pipe this morning is my Nording Number 2 pipe with Old Professor tobacco and my coffee is Manatee flavored blend coffee. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one you.
