Hope It Stays
I really hope music from the late 50's to the early 80's stays. I grew up with what I think is the best era of music. And I love it when young people today listen to music I've known for years for the first time and their reactions are just like how my generation reacted to so much music from that era. We were just as wowed. I can go back to Buddy Holly, although I was much too young to remember the Miss American Pie plane that crashed and killed him, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valenz.
But I do remember the early years of Elvis and his first appearance on the Ed Sulivan show. And I can remember how I felt upon learning of his death in 1977. I can name so many who are no longer with us today, but sadly too many died at the hands of their own volition. Too many died in plane crashes. Too many died from drug overdoses. And too many just died too young.
Music back then was the driving force of culture. Many voices spoke against the war. Many spoke against social injustices. A few were jailed for non-violent protests. But it always came back to the music. Many politicians and preachers blamed the music for poisoning the souls of youth. I could go on and on as I have here about music from my youth. But I hope it never goes away and young people are as wowed by it now as we were then.
We grew up understanding the meaning of the songs. The musicians, poets, songwriters were our voices. And we went to many free concerts because back then it wasn't about the money. It was always about the music. And when they weren't free, they weren't that expensive. Musicians back then just wanted an audience no matter what it took to have one. Most people who attended Woofstock didn't have tickets!
They did what they had to do to get there. Many hitch-hiked often being picked up be fellow concert goers. Many didn't have food for three days and most had to wallow in the mud from the rain. Woodstock wasn't planned. It was just a happenng! And yet no one complained about being there. It simply can't be duplicated no matter what organizers do today to plan anything like it. Everything about it was spontaneous and the whole thing was simply word of mouth.
Maybe I am reminiscing again about my youth and the music we grew up with, but in my thinking it was the best era of music the world has ever produced. Oh sure, I can still be wowed by a Beethoven Sonata or a Fugue by Bach, but no era had so much music by so many enjoyed the world over and wows as much today as it did then. So, forgive an old man for being sentimental about the music of his youth, but I just hope our youth then lasts forever! I think it will. It was so good then and just as good now. This morning it is my Peterson Sherlock Holmes pipe with my Old Professor and my coffee is Peruvian from Amazon Basics. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
