Carter Hall Since 1894

I have been anticipating my order of Carter Hall.  It is such a relaxing tobacco.  I knew I'd like it and am not sure why I waited so long to try it.  I guess it's because it comes in a 14 ounce can.  I've  known all along I would like it.  I've had several bowls the other day and now have had a number of bowls in several pipes and can now say I am very familiar with it.  Carter Hall is considered a Burley and Virginia blend and has a hint of sweetness.

I don’t have a whole lot to say about Carter Hall except that it’s a simple tobacco and isn’t complex.  I can see why it has been around for 135 years.  My wife likened the room note of it to somewhere between an English and an aromatic and for her that is quite a compliment.  I won’t say that it is an Aromatic, but is far from being English.  It’s just an unpretentious blend that doesn’t try to be something it isn’t.  It’s more comfort food as opposed to gourmet.  It’s a conversation with a grandfather as opposed to a class lecture.

Some tobaccos are hard to figure out.  Not so with Carter Hall.  The blend has a lot of history and has been smoked both by the common and the not-so common pipe smokers.  It has a distinctive taste and aroma all its own.  I really haven’t had any tobacco quite like it.  Every blend is unique in that regard, but Carter Hall stands alone.  It’s not similar to anything else I’ve smoked.  I can see why today pipe smokers still enjoy it.

So that is the skinny of Carter Hall pipe tobacco.  I say the 3.88 rating on Smoking Pipes does it justice.  It’s not for stars but better than three.  I put it there with Captain Black Original, which has a more pleasant room note.  It’s good enough to say every pipe smoker should at least try it.  A 14 ounce can isn’t a waste of money.  It’s just good comfort food by comparison.  Dining out is nice, but so is a good home cooked meal.  This is like a good home cooked meal.  Nothing fancy but just plain good.  I’m smoking it in my Arcobaleno Blue Savinelli pipe.  And my coffee his morning is Amazon basics.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
