The Other Things
Christmas isn’t just about a red Speedo, but it’s about other things like Angels and the Holy Family. I realize this. As much as I like Santa and his reindeer, every Christmas my attention turns more heavenward. I’m more focused there. I was moved watching a re-creation of the Angel telling Mary who she was. Mary was chosen for this very purpose. Chosen people are special. No question.
But as we get closer to the season I never forget why. Now, I realize Christmas is many things to many people. And I believe Jesus was born in the Spring. But there are so many reasons to celebrate a December Christmas. Retailers plan their retail year around it. And it’s the end of the tax year. Many donations are written off this time of year. I would prefer a secular Christmas in December and a holy Christmas in April.
But the images of both the religious and the secular fill our minds. In my thinking every day is Christmas. But the season would not be special if this were true. And if I were to say April 12 is THE day, what meaning does that have since it’s so close to Easter? But many scholars accept a Spring birth is Jesus.
December 25 is more secular for me, but images of Angels really get to me. They are reminders for me. Angels are more prevalent at Christmas than they are for Easter. I am emotionally moved by Mary being a chosen one. I want to explain this but I’ve said enough. Angels choose when and where they come.
It is the meaning of Christmas. Whether in April or December, the Christmas story remains. Christmas was the date chosen by Christians long ago in response to the pagan celebrations of the winter solstice. However, my religious celebration is in the Spring. But we can’t escape the religious in December. So, for me at least, it’s both. I enjoy both at Christmas. But in April it is my own Holy Day. I celebrate it very quietly in my own way. And you know what? It’s okay if I do.
Santa and reindeer are okay too. It’s both o in December. And that is okay too. I’ll never remove the pipe from Santa. I like that he smokes a pipe and has from the beginning. Today it is my Peterson Sherlock Holmes pipe with Cellar Reserve and my coffee is Stumptown Holler Mountain. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
