All the Trimmings
Okay, when it comes to Christmas I’m an old softie. I get nostalgic about the season and I too have visions of sugar plums. But when the season is over I feel like Santa relaxing on a secluded beach smoking his pipe. I’m happy when the tree is put away and life gets back to normal. My wife writes a Christmas letter every year and sends it out with greeting cards. But come January 2, I’m relieved it’s all over. We might still be eating left overs from the holiday, but I have a sense of relief when it’s over.
I no longer have to sit through sappy Christmas commercials and the car ads are no more. My wife and I often wondered who buys a car for Christmas? But really the end of the year is a great time to buy a car if one needs one. But some Christmas ads are too much. I can do without them. TCL just came out with a 98 inch TV just in time for Christmas. I’m sure some families will buy it for Christmas. I wouldn’t mind watching football on a 98-inch screen!
But it seems retailers begin getting their Easter merchandise out already. I like the seasons of retail. But Halloween overlapping Christmas is just too soon. I can’t stand to see a Christmas tree next to a Halloween skeleton! But such are the days we live in. Christmas sometimes comes on display after Labor Day! By the time Christmas comes we’re seemingly happy to see it go! Three months of Christmas are too long.
But during the season I’m a reformed Grinch. All that Scrooge in me disappears this time of year. I love the lights, the music, and the festivities around the holidays, but like Santa on a secluded beach with his pipe, I’m glad when it’s all over and life gets back to normal. And then we say the season is over too soon. There are a few of us who want Christmas year round. Those people need help in my thinking.
But the fact is we are in the midst of the holiday season. And I love this time of year. So, I’ll just be an old softie through the holidays and get back to my grumpy old man self when it’s all over. I’ll smoke my Christmas tobacco and relax with my pipe as much as possible during the season. My wife can ask me to do anything without a single complaint. Today it is my Pierre Lamay pipe with Smooth English and my coffee is either from Brazil or Guatemala. My son bought a bag of each but they’re not labeled. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
Dave
