He’s Off
According to the NORAD Santa Tracker Santa started delivering gifts at 4:00AM EDT. He’s over Papua, New Guinea, the last I checked with NORAD Santa Tracker. And he has 24 hours to make his delivers. So, it’s Christmas Day in at least part of the world. But all the fun aside, I do have fun with Santa, but there are families without little children. So, what do families like us do about Christmas? We treat it with loving care. I can remember the year that Santa no longer existed in our house.
But Christmas has always been special. As an adult, I prefer to think of Santa lounging around on a secluded beach after Christmas instead of traveling in an open sleigh in sub zero weather. As I write from Florida this morning, it’s hard for me to think about freezing weather—let alone sub-zero temperatures. I’m comfortable in just a sweatshirt this morning. I can’t imagine all that Santa has to go through today.
Sure he spends a lot of time south of the equator and those temperature changes have to get to him. I’ve done the math once about the cost of all those gifts,; how many he has to deliver; and the time spent at each stop. If one can do the math it doesn’t take an Einstein to figure out Santa can’t be real. A three year old can figure it out and by about six or seven most kids stop believing.
But why our fascination with the man? He represents the Christmas Spirit. And that right there says it all. Santa is everywhere because we can choose to be a Santa or a Scrooge or Grinch. I pretty much let my wife do the Christmas shopping and we’ll discuss things, but pretty much she does the Christmas shopping. I enjoy buying something special for her, but the shopping is her domain. She’s the Mrs. Claus that does everything for Christmas.
I sign where necessary. But otherwise I don’t have much to do with Christmas. But does that make me a Scrooge or a Grinch? I tend to think not, but while a lot guys enjoy decorating houses, I don’t really. I’m a Scrooge until it’s all done, then I’m the Scrooge on Christmas morning. I enjoy it all. Maybe I’m more like Griswold when it all works and it looks so pretty.
But these days I don’t feel like doing a lot of decorating. My wife loves it all, inside and out. Eventually I’m transformed. It just takes awhile to get there. But my point is everyone enjoys being a Santa. Especially if one has children. I’m envious of the after Christmas Santa sitting on a secluded beach smoking his pipe. I’m not envious of him today. But Santa’s reward is on Christmas morning. And in some ways, it’s mine too. Christmas morning has always been special at our house. And Christmas brings back those memories. So, here’s to all the Santa’s. You might not smoke a pipe, but I’ll never take the pipe away from Santa! Today it is my Savinelli St, Nicholas pipe with Cinnamon Delight and my coffee is Stumptown Holler Mountain coffee. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
