The Power of Silence

There is too much noise in the world today, and I blame the Internet for most of it.  There is power in listening and being quiet.  If I could claim a super power it might be the power to be quiet.  We can listen.  Everyone is talking.  But the best power comes from listening and being quiet.

Can I prove this?  Not so sure I want to prove it.  So many believe God speaks through them.  Gos speaks best when we are quiet and listen.  No, I can’t prove it.  Except by both Peace and Love.  These two words describe God at His best.  But no, I can’t prove this.  But I believe it.  We are at our best listening and allow fools to speak.  I like what C. S. Lewis says about smoking a pipe.  A pipe closes the mouth of the foolish.  I am not an evangelist for pipe smoking, but this world has convinced me we need more pipe smokers.

But too often fingers do the talking and not mouths.  Daniel Webster says that idle hands are the workshop of the devil.  But when hands are busy with a pipe they are less apt to type.  A pipe makes one pause and think.  It used to be said of used car salesmen and pipe smokers that they never approached a man with a pipe.  Why?  Pipe smokers don’t make impulsive decisions.  They spend time with their pipes and therefore it gives them to much time to think.

Thinkers aren’t impulsive.  There just aren’t enough pipe smokers any longer.  Too much impulsive thinking is proof.  That is all the proof you need.  We have given tobacco over to harder drugs.  Sure we protect lungs now, but what of the cost of mental health by not smoking?  And now it’s not tobacco we have to worry about.  We now worry about hard drugs and substances instead.

I won’t editorialize any more this morning, but a pipe gives a reason for thought.  There is a song that says silence is golden.  We need more who believe this to be true.  I’m quietly smoking my Peterson System pipe with Constellation this morning and my coffee is Stumptown Homestead coffee.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

Dave
