What is Spirituality?
First of all, it’s not a religion. It’s not really a belief. It’s a willingness to be alone by oneself. But it is NOT loneliness. One might say that Spirituality connects us to the universe. One can be an Atheist and still be Spiritual, although I might argue for a belief in a Supreme Being. But I would argue it’s not necessary. I can only define Spirituality from my own understanding without imposing it on others.
It might best be described as a state of being. And the closest I can describe it is a state of Peace and Love including inner peace of the self. But how is this achieved? What about life? We need time for ourselves. How much just depends. I have the luxury of a lot of time and some might argue including myself that I have too much of it. But the one thing Spirituality demands is time.
Christians might argue that it is time alone with God. I argue that it is time alone with the self. It is simply taking time with the self. This is where it begins. If we have inner Peace, it will show in how we interact with others. This is why it is a connection to the universe. And if the universe includes God, then fine. But it begins with the self and radiates outward.
But is this like a guru who sits alone in a mountain top contemplating the universe? We might have images of such, but that isn’t what it is. In fact, I could go so far to say if anyone defines it, they don’t know what it is. Spirituality can’t be defined except in terms of Love and Peace. But is it a lifestyle or just temporary? It’s both. The memories of the feeling stay with us.
But how can I be sure of this? I can’t. In fact I can’t speak for every Spiritual person. Not always Love and Peace are evident. It takes practice and time. It is sought not just given to us. Jesus says if you seek, you will find. Spirituality must be desired. And every person has their own way to acquire it.
So, where do we begin? It always begins with the self and recognizing you are a part of the whole. Then you begin to learn. There are many ways to do this through many paths each person takes. And it begins by taking time for the self. You can study masters. But it begins with a desire to learn. A person doesn’t wake up one morning and say they want to be Spiritual. But time alone is the beginning. After that it becomes a goal of achievement. That goal is not quick. It simply is a desire to learn. I had Divine help by the grace of God. I can only speak for myself. Otherwise it is a mystery. I smoke a pipe as a tool, but I am not an evangelist for pipe smoking. Today it is my with and my coffee is. A shout out to my son today who is celebrating his birthday! Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
