Quiet Morning

I’m smoking my Gettysburg pipe this morning with the last of my Captain Black Original.  My coffee is Cameron’s.  I enjoy the quiet living here in NY.  My Gettysburg pipe is one of my favorite pipes.  I often wonder who made this pipe and wonder whether it has any connection to the battle there.  I’ve made up my own stories about this pipe, but that is because I romance about the maker wondering just who they were.

I have time this morning to ponder this pipe as I smoke it.  Why does the hand carved into it only have three fingers and a thumb?  Why just three fingers instead of four?  That is a mystery that will never be solved.  It is a very mysterious pipe.  An antique store had a bunch of pipes in a jar.  I went through them and this pipe was among them.  They were all no name pipes.  So, I don’t even know the brand.

It has a silver band where the stem goes into the summer.  And I knew it was a quality pipe.  In addition this pipe was a bit more expensive than most other estate pipes in the jar.  The shop keeper said he had lust put it in there after cleaning the pipe but had no information about the pipe or even who brought it in.  He bought it for ten and said he’d sell it to me for thirty.

I don’t even know if the antique store is even there any longer.  So, it is a very mysterious pipe.  My Dunhill my family gave me for Christmas a couple of years ago is just as mysterious.  Because it’s a Dunhill, I can only assume the previous owner had some money.  But this pipe could have been owned by most anyone rich or not.

The carving isn’t really professional and looks as though the previous owner carved it himself.  But it is a quality pipe.  It may have come into the shop as part of a collection.  But whenever I smoke a previously owned pipe I often wonder about the pipe.  Was the previous owner a professional man and if so what was his profession?  What thoughts did he have while smoking the pipe?  What conversations has the pipe heard?  What other pipes did the previous owner own?

More than likely a male smoked this pipe rather than a female.  And I wonder what tobacco he smoked.  More than likely it was just a simple straight Virginia tobacco.  As for anything else I can add, I think that is about it.  Thank you for your time this morning and Peace to each one of you.
