It Takes Time
Okay, I have a thing for smoking pipes and tobacco. It took awhile for me to find them, but I’ve made at least a few friends on FB who share my hobby. I just found out that the Dunhill pipe my family bought for me a couple of years ago for Christmas is from 1978 and while they paid a few hundred for it, the pipe is actually worth about $1500 with the right buyer.
And everything these days is always with the right buyer. A wealthy businessman paid an artist ten thousand dollars for a painting with a single line on it. The businessman sold it for $25 million to a wealthier man for a museum. The museum now has it and the wealthier man owns it as part of his collection but gets a tax write-off for loaning it to a museum.
I can’t do that with my pipe collection. Except for my Dunhill my pipes aren’t worth that much. But some collectors have only a few pipes worth thousands of dollars. I often wish now I had the foresight back then to invest in expensive pipes, but I never had that kind of money to buy expensive pipes.
But I do take good care of my pipes and for some guys pipes are investments. I have a few nice pipes however. But I would say I am an average pipe collector. I began 50 years ago and never saw pipes as an investment. I have my reasons for not thinking too far ahead onto the future.
My wife and I were talking about where we would live. We have our home in NY, but our one son lives in Ohio. We are trying to decide how to divide our time. I have some medical needs that demand good care. I would have that in Ohio, but not NY where our home is located. I can stand the Florida heat, but not the winters up north. We miss the northern season, especially during the holidays.
So, in this regard we are thinking ahead. How do we divide our time on a limited budget? We’re working on it. But investments require long-term thinking. I don’t have that. It’s one luxury I don’t have. But today is today and I’m smoking my Peterson Irish Harp pipe with some Bayou Night. My coffee this morning is Bellla Maria. Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
