The Romance of the Pipe

 I said in this blog yesterday that my wife isn’t really crazy about pipe tobacco smoke.  I don’t know whether there is romance in vaping, but years ago tobacco companies relied on sex to sell tobacco products.  They wanted smoking to be sexy.  And maybe in a way it was.  But I can tell you from experience there isn’t much sexy about a guy who smokes unless it is a reminder of days past.  

I will admit that when I see vids of women smoking pipes I find it rather alluring.  But there isn’t much that is sexy about a bunch of guys gathered for smoking pipes.  I prefer to smoke alone knowing my smoke doesn’t bother anyone.  There is an old line from a cigar commercial that had a woman saying, “Blow in my face and I’ll follow you anywhere!”  

I won’t say romance is dead, but I will say that smoking a pipe doesn’t contribute to romance.  But I dispelled any romantic notions about pipe smoking long ago.  It used to be that guys who smoked pipes were seen.  A pipe was like an expensive accessory men would wear.  I’m pretty much done with buying pipes.  I have plenty to last me several lifetimes.  

But I still think of a pipe as an accessory.  I have cool pipes and some that aren’t so cool.  But I don’t think of my smoking a pipe as sexy.  I do it because I have done it for over 50 years.  For me it is a tool for meditation.  I understand that some think of vaping or smoking marijuana in the same way.  Some famous writers used opium.  

But for me a pipe is strictly for tobacco and nothing else.  Maybe if others see me smoking a pipe it might be kind of cool that I do.  But I do it for the relaxation.  I’m just more relaxed when smoking a pipe.  It gives me time to think and meditate.  This morning is Sunday and I am smoking my Angel pipe my wife gave me for my 70th birthday.  At first I thought the pipe was too nice to smoke.  But smoking it has aged it well.  I’m smoking some Quiet Night.  My coffee this morning is Bella Maria.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.
