Monday Quarterback

 I watched college football on Saturday and then Sunday I watched some vids reacting to the games.  I don’t need to make any comments about Penn State.  They were an early prediction to play in the college championship game.  But most, myself included, have written off their season.  They along with Texas are done for the season.  Both were the early favorites to go all the way.

Otherwise the games pretty much came out as predicted.  But many are shaking their heads in regard to Penn State’s loss to UCLA.  They were predicted to win by four scores and they lost.  UCLA took an early lead and never trailed.  Penny State never caught up.  Many are saying Penn State’s coach needs to be looking for a new job.  

But is this post just about Penn State this morning?  It could be.  There hasn’t been a loss like this in college football since 1985.  Penn State’s fans are embarrassed this morning.  It’s the same as if OSU had lost to Minnesota.  Many are still dissecting that game.  And maybe Penn State’s coach deserves my full attention this morning.  I don’t know.  

But UCLA was winless having lost to New Mexico and UNLV.  A team is winless having lost to two totally unrespected programs.  UCLA is considered the dregs of the BI0.  But they beat Penn State!  And it’s not so much that UCLA is praised, but that Penn State couldn’t beat them!  How?  How did UCLA win that game with a new program in the middle of the season!

I could go on and on about Penn State’s loss, but it is an earth-shattering loss.  They were favored by 24 points and lost!  Penn State’s fans don’t need my input to add to their embarrassment, but it is a historic loss.  I give high praise to UCLA and maybe they can salvage a 0-4 start to the season.  But Penn State is done for.  No one gives them a chance to salvage their season.  

I give high praise to UCLA this morning!  They did what no one has done on 40 years!  They did it with a quarterback who was all but washed up.  They fired their coach and staff two days before.  Then they beat one of the best teams in the nation.  They wrote a script right out of Hollywood!  

Well, I could drone on about Penn State’s loss or the miracle that came from UCLA, but I’ve said enough.  I can’t believe it either and am glad I don’t bet on college games.  A five dollar bet on UCLA winning was a $1500 gain.  Vegas lost big on that game.  Penn State is a loser now and they have to go on and beat OSU AND Indiana.  They have other games too but the damage has been done.  I’ll be an armchair quarterback this morning as I smoke my Peterson Irish Harp pipe.  My coffee this morning is from Guatemala.  Thank you for your time and Peace to each one of you.

 I won’t collect them all and maybe I’ll just have the one Sherlock Holmes pipes.  But it just might be my favorite series of pipes and if I collected them all it would take years for me to do so.  The other series is the Dracula series also by Peterson but I have no interest in the Dracula pipes.  I have my one Sherlock Holmes pipe, but what sets them apart is that they each have a silver band with the Sherlock head stamped on each one.   This makes each pipe different and although they might be similar to other Peterson pipes, each Sherlock Holmes pipe is very distinct and different.  If I were to get another pipe in the series it might be the Professor’s pipe so named for Professor Moriarty.  Each style was smoked by a character either in the book, on stage, or in the movies about Sherlock Holmes and his various enemies.   Each pipe is different and unique and comes in price ranges from about $125-$300.  I’m not interested in the more expe...

 Tomorrow ends the 14th year since my hear attack.  I had the widow-maker and only by the grace of God and a good heart surgeon I survived.  I had never experienced such pain in my life!  I knew I wasn’t going to die but my heart was damaged so much it functions at about 50%.   It was a Saturday and we were going to visit my mom.  The timing couldn’t have been better!  We could have been out on the road.  It was about nine O’clock in the morning and I had to pump up a tire on the car.  The funny thing is I had a BP check in October and it was 120/80 with no signs of anything being wrong.   I was about 30 pounds over weight and I simply was not taking very good care of myself.  I was under some duress during that time, but still no sign of it happening.  My wife questioned as to whether it was a heart attack but I told her to call 911.  I had no doubt what was happening.   The squad came and they confirmed it was a hea...

A Different Kind of Birthday

I might be the only one my age who says I’m fourteen today but I suppose if you were to ask my family I’m in my second childhood so-to-speak.  But yesterday I made a big deal out of my heart attack but today not so much.    It’s not that I fear death—no, I fear pain.  Death doesn’t frighten me in the least.  I have talked with many who have had that kind of heart attack and the women have said it’s worse than child birth.  There really isn’t a pain like it they have said.  If I could go without the pain I’d be in heaven right now.   But if I had to go through that pain to get there I’d rather live.  But a lot has happened in these last fourteen years.  And I’ve been alive to live my life relatively pain free.  My appendicitis wasn’t all that painful but the stomach tube was annoying enough.  But we sold our home and invested in another place in NY and now live with our son here in Florida.   I’m limited in what u do and I ...
