It’s About Memory
We all know about terabytes now, but there is memory past terabytes known as Petabytes. Some large corporations use petabytes, but then there are brontobytes and yottabytes. The computers used for the moon landing had memory of kilobytes. We have had more memory in the first Nintendos than the memory in computers used for the moon landing.
But it’s not just memory but the speed that memory can be accessed. I remember when the speed was 2600 kilobytes, but now for home use we measure speed in gigabytes. I can remember the noise connecting a land line to a server. Things have really changed in 25 years.
The amount of memory accessed quickly is mind-boggling. Speed can be measured in terabytes. The first computers took up rooms for kilobytes. Now we have smartphones that do more than a desktop did in the early nineties. When futurists try to figure out what is next they may be thinking about terabytes and petabytes in a smartphone.
What can AI do in a smartphone? 1984 is here. Some think that a smartphone can already read our thoughts. But as I said the other day that God can’t be replaced no matter the size of memory or the speed that memory can be accessed. Can microwaves from cell towers destroy our brains? Some tend to think so.
But at what point does AI replace God? I say it can’t. And this is why I don’t worry about it. Nothing can replace God. Politics and money make anything possible, but humanity will always be limited compared to God. I think about these things as I smoke my pipe. Humanity can’t replace God. I often think we have come about as far as we can go technologically speaking.
I smoke a pipe that literally has not changed in thousands of years. This morning my pipe is my Nording Number 2 pipe with some Cornell and Diehl Old College pipe tobacco. My coffee this morning is Mondo coffee. Thank you for your time and Peace and Love to each one of you.
